    - servers/hard drives/bandwidth aren't free
    - local hardware/software/infrastructure may not be free
    - coders & consultants may not be free
    - legal backup isn't free
    - integration arrangements may not be free
    - 'royalties' may not be free
    - advertising may not be free
    - its business oriented - setting it up & maintaining over time isn't free
    - this amount was meant for at least 6 months of operation
    ...

also, considering their competition and other indiegogo based projects, they might have actually went too low with this start-up amount (to be considered serious/viable)

current status: after 6? days still $0 USD (compilations claimed: 0), moving rather slow, eh?

The idea isn't particularly bad in principle (although I've only skimmed through the indiegogo page), but there are a few practical shortfalls. One, you're several years late - two stellar music trackers already exist, and they haven't charged users to start up or for usage of the site, short of voluntary, non-begged-for donations. Two, let's be realistic, the average user cares more about getting free music than whether the artists manage to get monetary support from this model. Three, the Oink image is a double-edged sword, as some might thing you want to cloak on that place's former greatness, something many others have attempted to do in the past (there were douches making fake donation funds to pocket some cash for themselves).

    @anon:

agreed, a related problem is that their platform is still vague in terms of how will it practically look like, whereas the competition is already up-and-running

two stellar music trackers already exist, and they haven't charged users to start up or for usage of the site, short of voluntary, non-begged-for donations.
if you're referring to w & w (not bush related, one may only hope), they are a different story: private, rather difficult to join, takes some effort to use, average joe unfriendly and not really legal by the currently widespread interpretation of the law

the average user cares more about getting free music than whether the artists manage to get monetary support from this model.
true, though the average user does buy (if he can, probably more than it is reasonable to) and feels obligated to contribute, not to mention that it is thoughtful of the site owners to be interested in making a compromise that would be reasonably beneficial to (all of) the involved sides/viewpoints

the Oink image is a double-edged sword, as some might thing you want to cloak on that place's former greatness, something many others have attempted to do in the past (there were douches making fake donation funds to pocket some cash for themselves).
a legitimate small-medium business scamming the users and getting away with it? maybe with some pretty good political connections or obscure/fishy 'locations'

Well, it seems there isn't really any other way if you want a music tracker to last. Look at all the revolutionary ones with open signups, or where there was no ratio, or quality requirements were more relaxed that sprung up over the years - all of them died.

    Certainly.

As far as I've seen, these were isolated efforts by a few unconnected individuals to make a quick buck off the FUD that followed the Oink bust. I've visited a couple of those pages, it was clear to me that they were fake due to being hosted on free services and using bogus premises, but for some it wasn't.

    An example: hxxp://home.arcor.de/coink/

that's what i meant. a tracker asking for a fat donation even before it started dösn't look right to me. all major trackers never charge for their efforts and other related things except for the server rent which is how it should be.

Ripping off the name and the logo of the good old oink, trying to benefit from it's reputation, is just wrong. If your idea really is that good start your own thing and don't be lame like that. i'm glad nobody donated yet because this looks like a huge fail in the making.

btw. maybe it wouldn't hurt to let someone else proof read your campaign text, there are like a million typos in there.
