My suggestion was serious, by the way. As far as I can see, Handbrake has the same functionality, but it's free software, so you won't have to worry about cracks and keys. My one and only complaint is that it can't do upscales... if you need that, then it won't work for you.

From what i could see this xvid4psp has lots of presets and also effects you can use. It sure looks easier for use than Handbrake for inexperienced users, while having the same advanced capabilities and settings for the expert users.
The disadvantage is having to pay for it, but that can be easily circumvent.

Handbrake has presets and effects too. With that said, it took me a long time to switch from viDrop to Handbrake because I didn't want to learn a new program... that's also a factor. Also, my definition of an "expert user" is someone who knows how the video codecs work at a technical level and encodes from a terminal, which may or may not be correct here (and does not include myself in any case ).

Can Handbrake encode only audio, without "touching" original video? That's why I like this app. You open the file, under video tab click on "codec: copy stream", choose new audio instead of DTS and all done.

Unfortunately not It only supports that for audio.

Do you use this to remux movies containing DTS audio for playing on TV that doesn't support DTS?
If that's the case then PopCorn MKV AudioConverter is specially made for that, much simple and does excellent job. On click of a button it demuxes (splits audio video), re-encodes the audio and remuxes again.

Exactly that. I bought a new Samsung TV only to find out it doesn't support DTS audio, so every movie I have, I need to change the audio to something else.

Use ffmpeg tbh. its free/easy. or other idea would be to use eac3to/mkvextract then demux the audio and then encoding it with eac3to/ffmpeg and then muxing it together with mkvtoolnix. this is bit complicated and requires few softwares but definitely better then working with stuffs that don't show exact stuff ex Makemkv.

PopCorn MKV AudioConverter uses the exact same tools you mentioned to accomplish that at a click of a button. You select once what you want DTS converted to and after that you only load the video file and click run. It does everything automatically.
It can convert DTS, OGG, AAC, FLAC, TrueHD to AC3 (Dolby Digital).

thanks for the info. i don't hate automatic softwares but neither do i like them unless there is no manual representative available mostly because i don't have the power here to both make mistakes and fix the mistakes and learning bit more. makes ffmpeg/etc superior imo.

ffmpeg is good. In fact, it's what many of these converters (even commercial ones) use to do the actual work, either as a library or background program.

However, while I have no problems dealing with the terminal, video encoding is one area where I find even a simple GUI much friendlier than the command line. I've had my fair share of "fun" with mencoder in the past, yet I don't think I mastered even the few codecs I used regularly.
