There's one at filesharefreak.org with the original design.

Chrome is a good browser if you leave the privacy stuff aside. To the average non-obsessed user, I'd recomemnd either Opera or Iron.

oh really, what you said above already aside the options and configuration possibilities are a joke compared to the mozilla products.

Of course Firefox will be more extensible, but Chrome isn't at the other side of the spectrum either. It also has a large selection of extensions. Also, it's undeniably faster. That was one of the reasons it gained popularity so quickly. Firefox isn't extremely slow (the Pale Moon fork on a SSE2 processor is very responsive), but Chrome's engine is always faster under the same hardware.

The only things I didn't like when checking it out were having one process per extension and not being able to turn history off without a external hack. (I might have found other downsides if I had kept on using it, though.)

My main concern would be that you actually have to go and disable them. Otherwise, the default setup is happy to phone home if you do things like typing on the address bar. This is a ten-second thing for you and me because we know this, but for a less-experienced crowd it's not that obvious that Google is keeping record of what they want to find or which pages they couldn't load.

yes it's faster but how much? using a current firefox here loads the pages pretty much instantly. i see no sense in having speedups in valüs of miliseconds. also all that fading makes the usage very slow compared to mozilla where i have instant clicks.
the only reason why it's so popular is because of the google label

but it's been a while since i used it so i just downloaded the latest chrome (18) and installed it. a bit off topic but what the heck. here is the result:

    what i miss:
    • asking for cookies to be set
    • disable image animations
    • no separate proxy settings (system proxy settings are used)
    • referer control
    • detailed network settings
    • and so much more - see below

i disabled all suspicious stuff i could find and of course all default google start pages and alike. it still tries to connect to:
    • ssl.gstatic.com
    • sb-ssl.google.com
    • clients2.google.com

but what i absolutely can't live without is about:config. there's an about:flags but that's a joke compared to mozilla's about:config. that's why i meant the configuration possibilities are so poor unless it dös exist and i couldn't find it.
going through the prefs.js i have for the mozilla browsers and looking at all the changes and extra settings i have there all that is not possible with chrome (nor opera and don't even mention IE). but again unless there is something like about:config and i missed it.
