Firefox 7 to use as much as 50 percent less memory

Firefox 7 is lean and fast | Nicholas Nethercote

    -----------------

Firefox 7 uses less memory than Firefox 6 (and 5 and 4): often 20% to 30% less, and sometimes as much as 50% less. In particular, Firefox 7′s memory usage will stay steady if you leave it running overnight, and it will free up more memory when you close many tabs.

This means that Firefox 7 is faster (sometimes drastically so) and less likely to crash, particularly if you have many websites open at once and/or keep Firefox running for a long time between restarts.

Firefox has a reputation for being a memory hog, and the efficiency with which it uses memory has varied over the years. For example, Firefox 2 was quite bad, but Firefox 3, 3.5 and 3.6 were substantially better. But Firefox 4 regressed again, partly due to a large number of new features (not all of which were maximally efficient in their first iteration), and partly due to some over-aggressive tuning of heuristics relating to JavaScript garbage collection and image decoding.

As a result, Mozilla engineers started an effort called MemShrink, the aim of which is to improve Firefox’s speed and stability by reducing its memory usage. A great deal of progress has been made in only 7 weeks, and thanks to Firefox’s new rapid release cycle, each improvement made will make its way into a final release in only 12–18 weeks. (These improvements are available earlier to users on the Aurora and Beta channels.) Firefox 7 is the first release to benefit from MemShrink’s successes, and the benefits are significant.
    -----------------

Firefox as fast as Chrome? I'd love it! but I guess we probably never see it as fast as Chrome

netbooks don't have 4GB memory and Firefox is critical for them (them = Mozilla for their market share/popularity and end-users to do other tasks).

really?, I thought the only problem that plagues my notebook is memory consumption, It can't handle lots of tabs and then the nightmare of hard disk memory swapping begins.

    Oh My God!!
Please tell me when Firefox 12,678,530.5603 is coming out, please. I just can't bear to wait anylonger.

You know it just might help if they actually upgraded the memory loss and other problems of their current versions before they even start announcing the release of newer verions before the problems of the previous versions have even been fixed.

I don't get it. Chrome is using the same awkward versioning and similar channels with their browser but no one complains.
As for actual version numbers, if you read a bit, Firefox team wanted to drop version numbers because they confuse users but actually this news has been welcomed with a lot of negative feedback from the community so anybody who's got a problem with that should reconsider for a second.
On to maters at hand. Most of the issues that the user base have complained about are solved in the latest versions and despite the fact nobody should be using the nightly channel I've been testing the waters and for me it's been a lot more stable than Chrome Beta, even stable most of the time. Despite all that I do not recommend hooking up to Nightly. The beta channel will give you a stable experience, and the Aurora channel will give you more improvements sooner. Your choice.
In the end, your experience might be different from mine, as everybody has different surfing habits. All I know is that there are a lot of badly optimized websites out there that might be giving your browser a run for it's buck so tread carefully. And if you don't like firefox there's always the latest version of IE that's been getting better and better, Opera that's always been a good browser but kinda of bloated for my taste, or Chrome that I've had a lot of bad blood with, but other users swear by it.

Firefox 7 went live in stable channel so consider upgrading. All other versions should follow shortly with and increment.

Yes, the nightly builds are faster, more stable and using less and less resources. For me the next major update I hope merges the UX branch into one of the existing branches, to have all of the updates with the new interface. Also waiting on new features being implemented as firefox has been turning a new leaf these past few months blowing all other browsers out of the water (no offense!).

FF 7 is quicker. How the memory consumption is, I don't know.

It might be quicker but it sure doesn't play nicely with some extensions.
