Top 10 Games of the first half of 2011

    ----------------------

Congratulations for making it halfway through 2011. June is a time for reflection. A time to look back over the year, and contemplate your experiences, as well as to look forward to things to come. We're a gaming website though, so we will stick to writing about games. So, without further ado, these are the ten best games of the first half of 2011, according to reviewers.

Scores taken from Gamerankings. List includes games released on PC, PS3, 360, Wii. Re-releases like Mass Effect 2 for PS3 were not included.

    10. Fight Night Champion (360, PS3) 86.35%

This unlikely hero made the cut, edging out the likes of Killzone 3, Crysis 2 and Mortal Kombat for a place in the top ten.

    9. Outland (Xbox Live Arcade, PSN) 86.74%

The only digital-only game of 2011 to make the list. Nobody at MyGaming played this (FOR SHAME), so we'll have to go with what Gamespot's Tom Mc Shea said: "Outland is an expertly crafted platformer."

    8. Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds (PS3, 360) 86.99%

A solid fighter that rewards both novice and fighting-game enthusiasts.

    7. Dirt 3 (PC, PS3, 360) 88.17%

One of the most technically brilliant games released this year, Dirt 3 succeeded by building on the series' previous strengths and adding enough to make it highly worthwhile in its own right.

    6. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC) 88.70%

Despite its disappointing final act, The Witcher 2 is without a doubt the best RPG released so far in 2011. Whether or not Skyrim will steal that title later this remains to be seen.

    5. Shogun 2: Total War (PC) 89.34%

Another amazing game that was released exclusively on PC, Shogun 2 is even better now than when it was scored by reviewers thanks to patches and DX11 implementation. Easily the best strategy game released so far this year, and in our view, a highpoint for the franchise.

    4. LA Noire (PS3, 360) 89.60%

It's rare that the AAA market gets new IP as innovative as LA Noire, which makes it one of the year's most important games. Subtle flaws tarnished the veneer, but still it takes the spot as 2011's most promising new mainstream IP so far.

    Read MyGaming's LA Noire review.

    3. Dead Space 2 (PC, PS3, 360) 89.87%

Criticised by some for not being quite as scary as its predecessor, opting for a more action-orientated experience, Dead Space 2 still managed to achieve critical acclaim.

Read MyGaming's Dead Space 2 review.

    2. Little Big Planet 2 (PS3) 92.88%

Sack Boy's return to the PS3 was celebrated for offering more of what made the original such a classic, while building significantly on the first game's level creation element.

    1. Portal 2 (PC, PS3, 360) 95.12%

A tighter narrative combined with some interesting new design elements helped Portal 2 live up to the cult-like success of the original.

While those are the top ten games of 2011 so far (according to reviewers) it is also worth browsing over the following list of games that, while being great in their own right, failed to crack a spot on the list:

Killzone 3, Mortal Kombat, Crysis 2, Rift, Bulletstorm, inFamous 2, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II - Retribution, Shift 2: Unleashed, Dragon Age 2, Homefront, Dungeon Siege III, Brink.

Ok, so maybe those last four weren't actually great at all. Let us know what your favourite games of 2011 have been so far in the forums.

Seems about right. Woulda loved to see Mortal Kombat in there though...

BTW 'Duke Nukem Forever' could win the title for the Most Disappointing Game of 2011
