(Reuters) - Facebook, the world's biggest social networking website, is set to launch a new feature next week, possibly in the mobile or tablet arena, its CEO said.

Chief Executive and founder Mark Zuckerberg told reporters in a visit to Facebook's Seattle office on Wednesday that the company planned to "launch something awesome" next week.

He said the project had been developed at the 40-person Seattle office, Facebook's only major engineering center outside of its Palo Alto, California headquarters.

There has been speculation in technology blogs in recent weeks about various mobile products in development at Facebook, including the release of a long-awaited Facebook app for Apple Inc's iPad and a specialized app for photo-sharing on the iPhone.

Facebook's Seattle office has made a mark on the company's mobile efforts, playing a central role in the development of Facebook's unified mobile site, unveiled in March.

A Facebook spokesman declined to provide further details about Zuckerberg's comments.

Facebook, the world's largest Internet social network with more than 500 million users, is increasingly challenging established online companies like Google Inc and Yahoo Inc for consumers' time online and for advertising dollars. According to the company, people that use Facebook on mobile devices are twice as active on the service than users on PCs.

not really fresh, maybe different from the 'predicted' or 'popular' or 'usual':

both fb & google are the same kind of organizations, along with most of the other multi/trans-national companies, competing (feigned opposition) with each other in the attempt to win over market share, profits and users (aka fans or following or sympathizers, usually in opposing camps): they want you to talk about them, use them, fight for them, be addicted to them, support them, make them profit, etc. - generally speaking, from their point of view: your life is supposed to revolve around them (as much as possible), they are supposed to be very important to you (as much as possible), their brand name firmly stapled onto your badge and planted/branded into your mind - whether one allows that to happen is his/her own choice, no need to fully blame the puppeteer if one enjoys playing (wants/chooses to play) the puppet, afterall, without puppets there would be no puppeteers (and vice versa)

To be honest I never really liked twitter.I use it only as a news feed in order to receive tweets from developers.I fail to see the point in telling everyone who's following you what kind of porn you're currently watching.

Twitter has a steep "learning curve", where until you can follow people who fit your interests perfectly, and can communicate with them (i.e., they answer, they're not PR employees), then you'll see that it is for exchanging ideas and live happenings and opinions, and not really about "I ordered a Pizza", "I am watching Baseball" or other Facebook-like behaviors xD

lol this is exactly what the vast majority of tweets is like. facebook, twitter and whatever is not different at all. those quotes are definitely as much twitter-like as facebook-like

you guys forgetting one good thing with fb, it keeps you in close contact with your freinds and relativs that are far away from you, make weekly events, as party, sport or picknic, i agree that many use it to post crap status but thats why i like to remove them from my vew list :)

I am disappointed, they called it "Awesome" so I had high expectations. This is a let down, and I am glad those people will be back to couch potato when Google+ takes over the world.
