Thread: Windows 8 (Official )

i hate to say yes i remember that cuz it will make me old ;P
Then I'm an 80-year old man.

...and one with full multimedia and Internet support in 64MB.
Technically you could still do that through boot.wim. Do you remember, when installing windows 7, that at one point you are asked to check for updates? How do you think it does that? boot.wim is like a 'template' for all your pre-installed environment needs.
Just need to configure it. Requires a lot of work because you need to know what packages/dlls and execs to keep/add.

wel consider 16 gb for the installation . and 20 gb for 64 bit... i checked the web.. u were the one who also made win 7 lite righht? cool
Yes well... I'm sorry it didn't work as it should. Instead of giving you the iso I wanted to make your own using those batches but for the life of me I still don't get why for some worked and for some didn't. Even though they had the same windows and codebase.

The batches are still there but I need to configure them for 8.

    Windows 8 RTM is out!
Anyone care to test it? Let's see what else M$ wants to shove down our throats.

And for those inexperienced with the new metro UI try this Windows 7 explorer for Windows 8 made by the Tihiy (the guy that keps 98 alive with his service packs).

I've been testing the Windows 8 RTM build for a few days, and I've got to say it's not that bad. I am using classic start menu from classic shell, and never ever leave the desktop experience for the tile views and it's ok. I don't like image and pdf previews open the full screen apps, and the fact that third party network drivers for vpns like tap adapters don't really work, but I'll get over it in time, after they fix them or I just find better alternatives.
The only bug I found so far, is that sometimes (happened only twice so far) the computer boots, I log in and it just stalls the driver and program initialization. It doesn't hang up, but the startup programs aren't loaded and the network remains disconnected. A quick restart fixes this. Maybe in time I'll never see this happen either.

Just wanted to announce that I am working on a Win8 lite edition. I just arranged the batches to work with 8 but there are still problems with it. At this time we're looking at a windows install size of 2.4GB. Through my calculations we can achieve a minimum of 1.8GB which is with 300MB larger than windows 7.
They included a lot of fonts and drivers in comparison to seven. So it will take some time.

So will you try to see if you can eliminate some of the not-often used fonts if possible??
Also, will you be including or excluding the pagefile.sys and/or hiberfil.sys as for example the hiberfil.sys isn't really all that necessary if one doesn't normally use it. I know that it can be taken out even after a full installation; however, just for the sake of conversation, I usually don't bother to hibernate mine own system.
Also do you have an idea of what unnecessary drivers you might not include?? I know it's a bit early in asking but just curious.

Well pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys are only created on the first boot. I made batch called SetupComplete.cmd that will make the pagefile 1.5 times your physical RAM and disables the hibernate file. In conclusion, these are not part of .iso so they aren't counted in the 2GB space.
I have removed ATI drivers, Hyper-V and RIS, Intel B43 Express Chipset, some Realtek drivers and a few more. Don't look like much but these alone occupy 300MB or so.

As for fonts, 260MB were consumed by font files that were 20~30MB each!!!

Good thing we like a challenged because as of right now, the DVD doesn't start. Gives a pussy BSOD which I cannot read because it is just a picture with no technical info.
Maximum achieved is 2GB install size.

Wow. Actually I didn't know this that these 2 files are created on 1st boot.

I know and so should you that somewhere sometime a program of some sort will not function properly because of our modifications.
Most people don't get it and complain if something fails. So...

And I think that you and I might have to agree Master Razor that, that is part of the trouble with an OS such as Windows. And others that are based off that OS such as ReactOS which supposedly is built on a Windows kernal. Also, when tweaking or building upon (perhaps lessening the build might be more appropriate to say) of the new Windows 8, are you also planning on increasing it's speed with the deletion of unnecessary drivers to load upon boot up?? I understand that many programs do require drivers of some sort to function and hence your statement above. However, is there ever such a possibility of amalgamation of drivers to reduce redundancy and duplication or would you leave that one alone entirely?? Perhaps it might be best left alone just in case?? What say you??

The network controllers, video drivers and chipset info are mostly generic.
Say Microsoft bundled the ATI drivers in their OS. If I remove those drivers does that mean the system will crash? No. This is because the OS relies on generic drivers (universal if you prefer). It just makes it easier for the average user.
Rest assure, the drivers the OS needs for the boot-strap will never be deleted by anyone because you simply can't. The OS won't boot at all. BSOD's everywhere.

Here's another thing that I am really amazed:

Windows 8 has the largest imageres.dll I have ever seen (66MB). Within it you'll bootloader images and other stuff HOWEVER look at what I've found:

There are 400 of these images!! I'll go write another batch...

From 66MB I got to 28MB just by removing the above.
