A gun is not the solution I dont think, It would just cause more problems with dead people lying around. I say hire a body guard to walk with you everywhere sounds more feasible!
Where I live people would just watch the fight and not do much. :(

I am sorry anon but it sounds like the guard was really trying to scam you. As a fellow citizen I know that there are ALWAYS weird suspicious people near every McDonalds because of the food they discard and because there is a lot of whiners that will give up to pressure when asked for money, either inside or outside the restaurant (Mcdonald's is not exactly a place for "tough" people).
I am sure they won't try to rob people because they know they can't come back if they fight with someone, although they will sure hit and run unsuspected victims (cellphones, goldchains) but taking away a bagpack is not a simple matter, specially from 3 guys.
Private Security officers are usually 50 year old unemployed guys that get paid a misery so they usually don't care about their job (which I understand and makes me suspicious about the so called robbers); so the fact that he told you that he identified some guys coming to get YOU specifically (which makes you wonder how could they found out about your personal belongings ) , knowing that he was aware of your posessions and offered you to leave them just sounds too .
I can even tell you that I once took a few things from a Mcdonald's just to prove that the guard was an asshole (he had an unnecessarily rude attitude with the girl I was with). So in any case try not to leave the netbook unattended or sit close to the door.
Worst case scenario, if they don't show you a weapon, tell them to fuck off.

Sounds pretty sensible, and I definitely wouldn't have liked to have my netbook and stuff (I don't leave home without my mobile phone, MP3 player and flashdrive) get "lost on the way".

Thankfully I didn't give them my stuff and we were able to leave pretty quickly after my friend rushed out (to fight if necessary, as described) and didn't see the thugs.
