    Do you have a laptop/netbook?
maybe you're doing it the wrong way.
I think you are right, I probably confused Stand By and Hibernate.
I did not know the difference.

Please don't say things like that, not only ubuntu is lighter but its resource usage is times lesser.. and im not even talking about the netbook version. You might want to read this but any ubuntu vs windows 7 benchmark test on the internet will do.

Was going to reply to this thread earlier, but... real life!

After I left the computer room, we went to the "multimedia hall" where some guys from the University of Buenos Aires showed stupid videos and told us we could do that kind of stuff with our netbook if we desired. The show closed with a silly usage instructions slideshow where tip #78 was not attempting to toast bread with your netbook (even if it's tasty).

Don't worry about that. The l33t staff here will deal with them.

I'm a fan of raw OSes as you know , I don't use these utilities because I've never believed in them,
but whenever I install Windows 7 I Do:
    *tips*

Probably, users of those utilities will help you much better than me.
Thanks a lot, will keep those in mind.

Just make sure it is not in the sun light, keep it open and all vents clean. A running draft is helpful.
I plan to leave it running overnight, are you sure I won't need the base? My father recommended getting one for those purposes, since one of his friends broke the netbook by leaving it turned on all night, even after following your other tips. And I think the base-cooler makes sense, since I live on a 3rd floor and we easily get temperatures of over 30°C these days.

-I wouldn't let it run all night long...If you do not have any other choice, just make sure there is a low CPU usage and a minimum ammount of I/O
My plans were to leave it seeding my torrents There shouldn't be much CPU usage or disk I/O since I use uTorrent with a large disk cache, though...

-DO NOT leave it in hibernate mode on your bag pack! (yes some people actually do this!)

-If you plan on transporting it a lot, get a good bagpack, and don't run when carrying it!
Thank you, though I doubt I'll ever take it out after what happened today (I'll make a thread about it soon).

Oh, and indeed hibernation dumps the memory to disk and completely shuts down the system, at least if it works the same way as in desktop PCs <- I have used that a few times in my desktop when I was in the middle of something and had to go, but a full shutdown wasn't a viable option.

So why put 7 on a netbook since its heavier than linux and not optimized for netbooks
Yeah, Windows 7 isn't the best. Right now I can't change my OS because of the theft deterrent system, which runs before the BIOS(!) and locks the computer if you reinstall, but after that lock's gone I'll just wipe everything and install MicroXP. Have heard amazing things about Ubuntu Netbook Remix, but I'm a Linux noob and don't have too much will to learn right now.

Will do, want to have a shower (it's a rainy day today) and chillax a bit, first. I'm charging it right now, also.

I strongly suggest to give it a go, don't believe in rumors that want linux to be "hard" to get into.
I would advise against microXP since it was not made for netbooks, id rather stick to 7 if what deodorant says about it being optimized for netbooks is valid.

It's ultra-light, it was made for everything with low processing power.

About the base:I've noticed that there is no standard about where coolers are placed at the bottom of notebooks and netbooks, so you might end up blocking it instead of cooling it. I don't know, I guess you should check one by one.
About Micro XP or any other XP based mod: keep in mind that XP is almost 10 years old, and newer OSes are made to take advantage of different improvements in hardware, which XP can't offer.

    Will do.

I'm posting this straight from the netbook. Using stolen Wi-Fi.

I didn't mention anything about WEP, all wi-fi networks are WPA2 protected nowadays and theyre no big deal to get into tbh.

I take it "whitelist" implies MAC filtering.

I have a doubt regarding the battery.

In general , battery's life decreases with charging & discharging (charge cycle) ? Is it ?

If the above is true , then we should probably plug it to the power most of the time right? Also, won't the newer laptop/netbook have mechanism to shut off the input power when the battery is full ?

    1. it's recommended to plug it instead of using battery power whenever possible.
    2. mine does, according the manual.
