    14 Blades

Release Date: 4 February 2010 (China)
    Director: Daniel Lee
    Screenwriter: Abe Kwong
Starring: Donnie Yen, Zhao Wei, Wu Chun, Kate Tsui and Qi Yuwu
    Studio: Shanghai Film Group
Genre: Action | Drama | Thriller
    Language: Mandarin

During the Ming Dynasty, the Emperor of China possessed one weapon greater than all others, the Imperial Guards, an elite force of assassins recruited from street orphans. Trained in clandestine combat from childhood, the Imperial Guards were masters of the 14 Blades, eight being for torture, five for killing, and the last blade being reserved for suicide when a mission failed. Above the law, with a license to kill, the Imperial Guards devoted their lives and lethal prowess to the service of the Emperor alone.

When the Imperial Court is taken over by evil eunuch Jia, the best of the Imperial Guards, Green Dragon and Xuanwu, are assigned to steal a list identifying those still loyal to the Emperor. However unbeknownst to Green Dragon, the Imperial Guards have fallen under the control of Jia, and during the mission Green Dragon is betrayed by Xuanwu and barely escapes with his life. Now as the most wanted man in the land Green Dragon must seek out and rally the loyalists to rise against Jia and restore the Emperor to power. In his way are the deadliest assassins in the land, his former brethren, the Imperial Guards.
It is a remake of the 1984 Hong Kong film Police Pool of Blood.

Yeah it's def. a movie any fan should watch.
Though I can't but feel that somehow the classics were so much better than any movie I've seen the last 2 years.

Oh yes there are a slew of gems from the past. There is a mini series he made yonks ago called Kung Fu Master that was the first time I saw him, but his acting skill has improved and matured with age as can be seen in Hero and Ip Man I perceive anyway

i saw both 'ip man' movies and didn't like them much, it felt too pretentious, both with strong propaganda & political side-picking & cardboard 1D characters

the first one was combined with some drama for which yen has little to offer with his rather wooden face, the martial arts were kinda disappointing with those short punches that aren't really impressive (and its questionable how much real damage they can do), oh and the little kid scene was so unnecessary

the second movie was worse, overly simplified and they just had to redo another kid scene as in the first one, the table fight was somewhat interesting, the boxer fights were utter garbage (both of them) with obviously no realism, not to mention the cheesy ending

Sadly IMDB score doesn't say all that much for me. Asian movies usually have terrible scores while they're quite good and a lot of high scoring movies don't please me at all. Sometimes it's just too personal imho, though it's indeed a nice way to see what the general public thinks

It DOES have Jet Li, of course

Think I'll queue it up sometime anyway. If it's mildly entertaining, I'll still be pleased :)

i'd say imdb is not really relevant to represent (general) public opinion, but they do have some influence in creating it

heh, how did you arrive at this topic?

well, i never got into it, wasn't appealing to me - other than that its a rather unique way of expression/art/music and i do like/enjoy when for example operatic singing and/or male/female choirs get combined with metal music (which i predominantly listen to), for example in this post:

lead operatic female vocal: Nightwish - Sleeping Sun (original version 1999, original video)
    choirs: Fairyland - Rebirth
