okay so we have amd with via chipset and 9400 gfx. you can run a version with patched kernels and you need a patched via kext.
you will not be able to run a vanilla kernel which will disable a few apps for you but the majority should work.
gfx card is fine.

no, but 'retail' means vanilla kernel and only patched, original kexts. both is not possible on amd

maybe leopard, 10.5 would be a better start because there're more complete custom installer dvds like iatkos or ideneb

yes i agree with instab you might need to try leopard first,
i think this supports AMD? modbin kernel

well, the via kext for your via chipset, nvinject e.g. for your gfx card etc.
every kext has an explanation in the field below. just go through them and pick what matches your components

of course not, it's different every time. depends on each individual machine. there is no default installation
