Thank you for all to the contribution for this topic. I have read it -- really -- even though my post count and account activity doesn't support it.
Anyway, I have tried IRC myself now, and the result was that it isn't the best method in the market.
Even so, I would like to know that is it more secure to use IRC than bittorrent; what do the servers and channels know about me if I am using mirc? Is it only an ip address, and my (fake) email -- or do they get some other info too, such as my system name and mac-address?

I used it long time ago. Is the fastest for download but sometime the bot are occupated and you are in queque. For that if you want speed uTorrent is better
Tried it on couple of occasions, speeds were mediocre but I disliked that whole concept of downloading. Torrenting is way better.
IRC did kind of die off the minute torrenting started imho. Before that, it's was probably the better way to get your stuff.
Only other options was stuff like Kazaa. IRC speeds, the probability to get fakes and the quality were much better on IRC.

Oh and remember those cheat addons back then? To auto click the "find more peers" button every 5 minutes while you were out?
And set your participation level to 1000 and such? I think I do... or did that come out later?
