    Google Public DNS

Google Public DNS is a free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service, that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider.

    To try it out:
    • Configure your network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers or
    • Read our configuration instructions.

If you decide to try Google Public DNS, your client programs will perform all DNS lookups using Google Public DNS.

    I ping OpenDNS with 300ms,

i pinged 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 and its 180ms so this is a good hunt.

Google Public DNS stores two sets of logs: temporary and permanent. The temporary logs store the full IP address of the machine you're using. We have to do this so that we can spot potentially bad things like DDoS attacks and so we can fix problems, such as particular domains not showing up for specific users.

We delete these temporary logs within 24 to 48 hours.
    should i believe this ?

It's Google... using this already enables them to practically track your whole Internet usage. I'm eager to try this, though.

I'll keep OpenDNS for the time being. Maybe some time later I might try this.

Yeah, lets worry about Google getting our IP! because Google Search, Docs, Mail, Maps, Books and every single page in the world doesnt!
Im sure all of you use Goolge Search, and most of you use a Google product such as Gmail.
So, most of your concerns are unfunded.
The only think I can think of is that they might match up your IP in your DNS requests with the IP in your Google Product Cookie (Gmail, whatever) so that they can determine what YOU (not like in you personally, but you demographically) are looking for, where, how, when and possibly why.
This will be like a huge market research, to get Something like: 75% of the 20-25 yr old single males from USA search "free porn" from 21hs to 01hs, while only 10% of females in the same age range and time did
I am pretty sure NO ONE in Google cares about who you are, they just want to make money (like us!) so they offer you a free product in exchange for the right to keep and use the information you provide them.
So, again, is not mandatory, you want it, use it, you dont, then dont.
I personally do not care about a 100ms improvement in my browsing.
As someone said before, use the hosts files, that is 100x faster because you SKIP the DNS, it will be as fast as reading the file from your RAM, at least for the pages you visit oftenly.

Google is starting to turn into a spy, its not a matter of my purpose of using internet. Its matter of laws that huge corporations comply with to keep user privacy. You don't know what could be used aganist you one day.

Anyone heard of secret project of an ISP "Don't remember its name" to analyze huge data amount its users download without notifying them?

It might be a propagenda to scare sharing communities but "The safer usually the better"

i personally and others do not like logging the websites we visit, you can count us as "Privacy Paranoid Nerds",
i also guess this logging is for privacy-statics [aka ""Improving Google Excuse""] but i don't like it.

I personally do not care about a 100ms improvement in my browsing.

sounds nice, i never thought of the hosts file anything useful other than making a virtual cheatos.com for testing PHP codes, so this will be the method i will be using from now on.

So, again, is not mandatory, you want it, use it, you dont, then dont.
if we had the option to disable logging then i might _think_ of using it.
so according to your theory , i wont be using it .

I don't use GMail anymore ever since they implemented SMS activation, and I use Scroogle for searches.

You're right, but consider some things:
    1. if the IP for a domain name changes, you'll need to get the new address from a DNS,
    2. a hosts file that's longer than 100KB may slow you down,
    3. it's possible to make "shortcuts" like this (for example: "google"=74.125.159.99), but not all sites react correctly to this when they don't recognize the Host HTTP header.

    @Cheatos: Good Choice!

@anon: never heard of Scroogle. I Googled it ( ironic, isn't it?) and i have to say, it just gets the proxy's IP, so I don't know. I (with all due respect) do not care about Google getting my dynamic IP registered for Telefonica or whoever owns it (not me for sure!)
And what you said about the hosts is absolutely right, but keep in mind you will have to add thousands of addresses (manually!!) to your host in order to achieve that size.
What I meant is that adding those pages (or trackers) we visit everyday, that do not have a server farm or cloud could be a big help.

Sure, Google will see Scroogle's IP, but also, cookies and ads are trashed, and a random Google server is picked for every search. It's for those are paranoid like me It also lets you encrypt your searches via SSL, something which as far as I know Google doesn't let you do.

Secure DNS from COMODO is another alternative.
