For rescueing data: HDAT2 <-- worked like a charm for me.
Maybe HDD Regenerator can do it also, but I didn't test it.

    btw, nice thread.

edit: you may grab it from hirens boot cd, get it from the usual places.

HDD Regenerator works very well it is better to use HDD Regenerator 1.70/1.71 or newer, old editions were slow.

Okay, I couldn't test it. Seems to be that hiren removed it in the latest build (v.11).
However, will give it a try, one of my hdd is currently not working properly (anyway offline).

After Two days of scanning and sh*t with the piece of crap called SpinRite
I got the error below which i copied and can't send it to the developer because i didn't buy the software.

    Code:
    Division OverFlow Error
    B022
    EAX:0001E3D9 ESI:00000000
    EBX:0000000F EDI:0010003F
    ECX:00000000 EBP:007D0000
    EDX:00000122 ESP:00003FEE
    DS:10E4 ES:10E4
    FS:7049 GS:6FE8
    SS:3473 F2:02046
My windows was down and my 640 GB disk was reading (unpartitioned space) after having this error and i was out of my mind.
Luckily, a friend of mine recommended using "MHDD" from "Hiren's BootCD" and saved both my data and my life
Nothing feels better like a recovered data

    The Bottom Line is:
    SpinRite is fu*king sh*t.

Extraterrestrial SpinRite is not a shit it is just old program from the past(before sata era and many other technoogies). No one uses it anymore. I also tried HDAT2 and it is somehow not convincing for me. Only program that I am sure works well is HDDRegenerator 1.71 or 2011(1.6 was slow). HDDRegenerator should check and fix if necessary your 640 GB HDD in 6 hours or less.

Never had such issues but it's certainly glad to hear you recovered your data, ET.

I didn't know about MHDD, I'll keep it in mind.

The problem is solved now using MHDD from Hiren's BootCD which i recommend to anybody having the same problem and yeah SpinRite is sh*t, after only 1 hour of using it, i heard sound of whistling coming from my hard disk and i was like what the fu*k is going on, decided to continue despite this sound and after two days of scanning, it stopped showing this error...i rebooted the computer and windows couldn't load, installed a new one ( losing all my data in c: "my recent downloads" ) , the harddisk was reading as unpartitioned space and when i click to enter a message pop telling me "do you want to format the disk" then comes a friend with using MHDD and problem is solved.

I didn't know about MHDD, I'll keep it in mind.
I will back it up also ... i think the hard disk is dying and better safe than sorry.

How long it took the MHDD to scan your hard drive?

It took me no time, SpinRite corrupted my hard disk ( headers or sectors "i can't remember the name of what it is called" ) and that's why it showed like unpartitioned space while it was full of data, MHDD corrected the headers to it's factory settings and i can now access my partition, scan my computer and everything is ok.

I would only recommend people using recently updated software. SpinRite is too old and was never a good program, good to know that MHDD is still working - it is a bit old like for me, it looks abandoned. HDAT2 i do not like and i managed to achieve spectacular results with HDDRegenerator on old disks.

    Here are last updates dates:

HDDRegenerator 2011 last update 2010.09(i can not find and detailed changelog for it, so some of the updates could be marketing refreshment)

    HDAT2 4.8.1 last update 2010.07

    MHDD 4.6 last update 2005.08

    Spinrite 6 last update 2004.06

I rescued a 2tb disk with HDAT2, every file is still working,
before I used it, files were corrupted and folder were unaccessable.
Maybe that's the reason why my opinion might be biased.

    Plain worth a try.
