up to 100 torrents per day, they would need up to one 3TB hard drive every month to backup all the uploads...maybe to just periodically dump it all onto usenet would be an alternative option

thats the trouble with filesharing, no proper/organized/maintained backups, files become scattered on numerous/random (user) hard drives, unreachable, damaged/modified, forgotten, seems no one is interested, let alone financially able, to sort this mess out in any meaningful/useful/advanced way

Those numbers are pretty big, but based on what I know about the tracker, I had no doubt they would be.

That's not a downside, it's part of the attractive. When many people all across the globe have copies of one thing, that's the most resilient backup system ever. Now, being able to reliably and quickly "restore" those backups... is a different matter.

"Real men don't use backups, they post their stuff on a public FTP server and let the rest of the world make copies." -- Linus Torvalds
"Real men don't use backups, they put their stuff in an archive named windows_nt_4_source_code.zip, publish it in filesharing networks and let the rest of the world mirror it." -- Variation of the above quote

copies will spread no matter where they came from, so this is already a given (outcome) - keeping things organized/maintained/available/backuped/... takes extra effort, but relying on random average joes to properly take care of this content and keep it available is a major downside (like: lets hope they do...lets hope that when the need arises, the files will still be available)
also, whats the point of a backup if you can't (reasonably reliably and quickly) do a restore with it?

"Real men don't use backups, they post their stuff on a public FTP server and let the rest of the world make copies." -- Linus Torvalds
    - not entirely truthful, i'm sure he made plenty backups of his own code while developing it
    - easy to say when referring to popular content, like linux
    - and when the server data eventually becomes damaged/unreliable, to restore the content, they use...wait for it...backups
    - what he meant was probably: real men use others to do their backuping for them
    - real men? thats a good one hehe

I'm extreme (or at least that's how i'm categorized), and have gotten no secret email or message. Don't anyone feel that they're being excluded because they didn't seed enough. They may be doing something and not telling everyone, but it's apparently not something that's based on one's user classification.

There are reasons to hope, as anyone that's read the various goodbye threads could know, but... Who knows what the future holds...Not me.

    ------------

    edit:

    Actually, i just found out.

If you haven't heard something by now then you - like me - are buggered.

I get the impression they want to keep this new site very low-profile, but how are they choosing who gets in..?

    oguz' post above.

Anyway, word about the secret site just got out on FST (with screenshots!), so if they had any hope of remaining low-profile, it just went to hell.

Edit: I really want to call call this "the CosaNostra effect".

Probably based on who donated them the most money over the years.
