    TheBox.bz

    Tracker: TheBox
    Tracker URL: TheBox :: Login
Open Signups?: Depends upon number of registered users, invites are enabled
Category: British TV and Radio. No films.
    Number of Users: ~75,000
    Number of Torrents: ~40,000

The layout of TheBox is similar to most other trackers, with basic functions near the top, and your profile's stats being displayed; this has not been changed much in the (close to) two years it's been around, though a banner change did occur around January of 2009.

As is mentioned, TheBox tracks around 40,000 torrents; that's huge! And it's growing; each day around 50 torrents are uploaded. Most is content uploaded by members themselves, and there are relatively few Scene releases. You see, TheBox is a very unique place: they have their own cappers. Just under 35 in total, these people cap the vast majority of British TV, for nothing . Who needs The Scene, right?

TheBox also has very strict rules as to what can be uploaded; it has to be atleast 2/3 British produced TV, TV-movie, or Radio, andin very special cases, audiobooks. Because of this, not everything can be uploaded, and those who wish to upload can ask for permission first; "D" goes through each requesting, checking it's production background, and stating whether it can be uploaded or not. The result? High quality British TV and radio. They even go so far as to moniter what you name your torrent when you upload it, so it is easy to find! Formats vary; only a few formats are banned, but the majority of content is in .avi, and DVD-R (NTSC and PAL are both allowed).

So perhaps you aren't interested in the latest British drama, or what have you. There's still plenty of other material. Football (soccer) / cricket / rugby (union and league) / snooker / motoGP; so much sport is available you don't need to even download a TV show from TheBox to appreciate it.

The forums are very active, and all participating members are kind and helpful. Ofcourse there's the general chat section, to talk about shows, the helpdesk (for help with Windows, Linux, and Mac OS!). Though, perhaps the best part to the forum, is the other tracker section! You can find individual threads for different trackers, where you can ask for an invite, or trade; (they even giveaway free What.CD invites) however, you have to be a power user + to post in the other tracker section.

Two other great features are the radio and chat. Recently the shoutbox was replaced with an IRC Java applet, so it's not much hassle to socialise, and the radio is fairly new is as well. Another feature is it's request box; you would have thought with 40,000 torrents there wasn't much else to British TV, but there is. Most requests seem to be for 70s and 80s TV shows, so unless it's on DVD, they are rarely filled.

Speeds are good; if you download a TV show that you missed last week, the torrent could easily have 200+ seeders. Enough to max out any connection (excluding Koreans with the 100/100mBit ) If it was an old episode, it's probably been put into a pack, and will likely have less than 5 seeders. Again, if a torrent dies, you always have the option to request a re-seed. There are also quite a few users with seedboxes, and again has it's own forum help and topic section. Most cappers own seedboxes as well, so torrents are seeded quickly.

Honest ratio keeping is no problem. There are hundreds of freeleech torrents, contests (where the winner recieves x Gb), and just seeding on it's own is enough to keep a decent ratio. If this fails however, there's even a section where you can request people download a torrent you are seeding, and there are plenty of volunteers!

In terms of cheating; I cheated once with NRPG RatioMaster and was instantly banned, but I got an account there again, and I've never had to cheat. If you have cheating info please post.

In conclusion, if you are a Brit, or just interested in British TV, then this is one tracker to definitely have in your arsenal. Missed you favourite program? It's on TheBox within an hour. Wanting the latest Top Gear, Skins, East Enders, Corrie, but live abroad? It's on TheBox. TheBox is a wonderful community; from their own capping team to the more than welcoming and helpful people in the forums, who are there to help you, invite you, and talk to you. But, as is more than obvious, if you aren't from the UK, or don't speak English, then you probably won't appreciate it as much.

    Great job with the reviews.

As more are written we could make an index thread.

Definitely; I can't be a member of all sites can I? Go for it man!

But I only ask three things:
    1. That they be your own work, not copy + pasted from elsewhere.
    2. They are written in the best English you can achieve. This will give a professional feel, and users who use translators will find it easy to read. Example: use of "u" versus "you".
    3. That you stick to a format for each post. Again for a professional feel, and also makes it nice and neat.

    I use this format:
    Basic Info
    Appearance
About the site in general; content / rules / forums
    Speeds
Cheating there from your own expirience
A conclusion to some up the site
A screenshot of the site's "Browse" page

That is a damn fine idea, Aurion.

HOw come you come up with such good ideas and they just pass me by??

No, seriously, I think that having such reviews would really help out others thinking or desiring to join such a tracker.

There's too many sites to name and honestly, when one has such reviews on the tip of thier fingertips, having such reviews really would help. I think its a fine idea.

And just for that, I'm'a gonna 'thank' you.

    Question from a noob

This won't be brief but I'll try. Coming for an extreme noob on this site I wanted to say thanks to everyone who works hard at their skills and who shares their wealth of knowledge with the less knowing and experienced. Thanks!

I am not new to computers in the least and not new to torrents or private trackers but some of the terms and chatter is above even me. I ran into a problem and after about 4 hours of research on this site I decided to join so I can pick the brains of the great posters. I run a business that is in trouble from the current recession and my time is split between making a living, taking care of my family and kids, and trying to maintain my sanity. I use the torrents to get what I want and need so I can save my cash for the important stuff. My time is valuable like everyone else and it's hard to spare more than 30 minutes a day but I am making time to further my eduction.

My problem with thebox is that I wasn't planning on staying a member but they have added security that didn't allow me to get what I wanted and I always find a way. I was put on a no download list and then after finding this site I cheated my way back into downloading again but the problem was I was trying to maintain a standing ration of at least .80 but wanted to boost my stats so I could finish these two downloads which topped 25gigs. I set my download low so compensate for what I thought was a good plan but apparently nobody else was downloading this file but me and now I am banned. I am smarter and more careful than that but I really wanted this download. I created another account from a different location and I downloaded a few things to test out greedy torrent to make sure I had the settings right and got banned again. I have one other account setup from a third location and I don't want to burn that account just yet.

I changed my IP a few times and tried to use the AOL, Router, and a few others I saw posted here recently (May 4 2009) I keep my cache cleaned out along with the cookies and I have other things in place for normal protection. Even though I changed my IP they still had my as being blocked and I have tried almost everything I can find besides changing my MAC address. Does anyone know how they are still blocking me even though I am using a different IP? I saw a few people who talked about being banned from thebox a lot of times and I was wondering how they were able to get that many accounts if it was using the same computer and connection or did they go to different locations. I am using XP, with Utorrent 1.8.1, Greedy Torrent, Cable modem on a decent system. Any and all info will be appreciated. Thanks.

My apologies for the long post as I know your time is valuable and I appreciate it.

That happened to mmmmm too. TheBox blocks IP ranges, rather than individual addresses.

You mention having a Cable connection - try the IP switching script that's on my signature. There's a small chance it gives you a completely different range, which combined with clearing cookies, cache, etc. should re-enable you to use the tracker.
