Anyone running osx86? I like osx but I really can't spend the cash on an actual machine. My hardware seems to perfectly match the requirements, though.
About to get a copy. Curious if anyone else has tried it?

I wish that I could be more helpful to directly osx86 but I have used extensively System Commander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (version 9.04 for me) for many operating systems but never Darwin :frown: I have had on a single machine like 10 at once and it works beautifully but I don't think it's maintained any more. I don't have any machines that are very new so I don't know. But I might think there might be other multiboot softwares out there that would work better than the 'beginners guide' since I find 'System Commander' so excellent. Been using this for years.

Actually getting it installed is not really an issue. Niresh and Unibeast are pretty easy to use and do the job perfectly.
Just wondering if it's worth the trouble though. After reading a bit more, you can't even update osx86, you have to reinstall a new version instead :(
Obviously it won't be as stable as having an actual mac, either.
You going to lose nothing though, I am pretty sure that it will be a great experience and some one have to try and give me feedback. :D
I have heard that it's stable enough to enjoy it but it will never be as a Mac obviously.
Fair enough, except for time, which is pretty damn precious :P Lacking time as is :(
I'll think about it during my days off, which are pretty soon-ish. If I go through with an actual install, I'll post my findings.

I have a newer icore, a gigabyte motherboard and a hd6xxx graphics card. Reading the interwebs, that seems like a perfect match.

Also, I haven't found too much info on this, but will I be able to keep my current windows installation, or will I have to install it _afterwards_ like most guides say?

and for the record, 10.10 is a no show yet because it only accepts signed kexts which prevents the use of the previously popular fakesmc. that's however only interesting if you can bear the new looks :P

Stuff installed smoothly (went with chameleon cause clover was being a bitch) on a disk on its own (so no sharing). Ran multibeast afterwards as well.
However, I can't seem to rotate my screen to portrait (even when holding option/command/whatever when accessing the menu). My IGP doesn't seem to be working either, even though I ticked the option, meaning only 2 out of 4 monitors are currently showing picture. Also have to boot with -x since normal boot gets stuck and complains about HPET being disabled, while it is indeed enabled. I don't know what that means, but guides told me to do so.
All in all, first experience not so good. I had an actual mac years ago, and I was pretty happy with that, though. I'm not giving up just yet, but if I can't find any quick fixes for these issues, I'll probably throw in the towel. I'm not really one to give up quickly, but as far as os'es go, things need to go fucking smooth. I'll easily obsess over minor details for a couple of days when I'm working on my drawings, but things like this (e.g. on os level) seriously need to work withing 15-20 minutes to keep me happy.
Luckily, my win8 boot wasn't borked too hard. It did some repairs and booted up again.
Not happy :(

yeah i know, but i was expecting stuff like "the printer won't print". Not being able to rotate a screen or having a white screen is not because it's misconfigured. That is something that should just work :P
That being said, windows 8.1 is basically an installation without configuration for me. I just install chrome and adblock afterwards and the machine is up and running.. Same with the lubuntu/ubuntu installs i did half a year ago.
I understand it's a hack, but how hard can it be to enable the rotate screen option or configure your screen so picture is actually showing.... Even after successfully installing needed drivers. Meh, I'll look into it again later, maybe I'm not seeing the obvious.

but if you're interested in more you could have a closer look at Quartz and OpenCL.
keep in mind that osx is not designed as a "work-with-anything" system unlike windows or linux but only for what apple sell which is one of the main reasons why it runs so well. many of the advantages proprietary systems have is because they have exactly that specialized support
I've been following this thread and thinking about hackint0sh. If I ever get some free time (sorry, priorities, summer, work, family and sleep time) I might try, and I'll remember this thread and could make another.
Like what? Default anti mallware/anti virus works well enough and is on by defult, and I usually turn that off because I just don't need it. I scan my 'puter every 6 months and I've been up and running over 15 years without a single infection. I've passed that stage as user where I'm smart enough to not click weird ads on weird sites... Honestly, I don't even visit those anymore anyway. The only real threat that remains is my email, and having a gmail (yeh i know, evil google, but having an android makes using google's services so nice) everything gets scanned anyway. i don't click links i receive and it prevents me from opening dodgy things, even if i know they're safe.Quote:

Well, after working on it far more than i was originally planning, it seems my screen issue can only be resolved by hooking up the monitor through display port instead of dvi. since that is not an option for me, i'm rather annoyed. (and seriously don't understand why? mac pro's have dvi >.< )
So that alone is kind of a show stopper for me, unless i sell my best monitor :/
I got all the rest working just fine, though. Which is kinda cool.

Awesome, thanks. Not gonna risk breaking my card over it, though. Flashing my card's bios with a manually edited one is just not worth it for me. Besides, the resolution actually shows up in the list when i go to display. It just won't stop painting all white unless i hook it up with a display port cable, which i don't want to do.Quote:

Again, the card worked fine. It's osx86 that required the usage of display port for that kind of monitor, which is silly.
