You mean shortened urls? Then something like this will be useful:

KnowURL: Expand Original URL From Shortened URL
http://checkshorturl.com/
GetLinkInfo :: Expand tinyurl/bit.ly URLs, get YouTube video info, get webpage title/description, find URL redirections

If not and you are talking about a full url that looks suspicious, I think you can Whois it and see if it seems legitimate.

If i use the wm in reverse like this... starting the wm for 1 hour after i seeded for 48hours, Will the upload speed be divided by all the time i seeded (49 hours) or just the last 1 hour, making my speeds appear huge?

Yes, because the visible speed is an average. However, there is some safety inherent in reporting the upload in combination with stopping the torrent, so that's the recommended way.
