    Exclamation Got Bad Sector HDD?

    Hi,

Last couple of weeks one of my hdd's died, because of bad sectors. I normally use chkdsk in dos/command prompt to fix it. But one day it did not work at all, so decided to search on the net and see what program is better and I found SpinRite.

It fixed my hdd back and now I can use it again. Although be aware that if your hdd is really damaged it can take up to 3-4 days to finish scanning, but you can always start and resume from a position.

It can't fix your bad sectors obviously but at least it can recover it and make it usable again.

    Spinrite

Any questions, feel free to ask

I had a similiar problem and also considered using spinrite. In the end, after reading some info on the uT forums, it was discovered that I best replace my HDD with a brand new one.

HDD do get old, contrary to popular idea that something of mechanical/ electrical construction will exist until eternity. It don't, just like other things of any construction. Things get old, fall apart, until it just can't be fixed any longer.

Well, I don't disagree with you when you say nothing beats replacing with a new one. Everything mechanical will die sooner or later. But if you have data which you needed and your hdd suddendly died from bad sectors factor, i'm sure you wouldn't complain about this program getting it back for you

edit: I don't say this program is for long term solution to replace a HDD, but one easy way to get data back only :) I do plan to buy a new hdd soon.

What is expensive? HDD? or the program?

HDD's aren't expensive now...they are really really cheap, and even the program you could download the full version somewhere, and even if you were to buy it, it's not that expensive at all.

    89$ is a lot.
There is no mention of a free version.

Try repairing hard with HDD Regenerator. It worked really great for me. And you can get it with other Hiren's boot disk tools here: Hiren's Boot CD 9.9 and All Other Versions - HTTP Download

Grambo, it should be easy to get it for free

Level 5 SpinRite scans can be lifesavers. Specially on ocassions like files being randomly corrupted every reboot, or when you're booting Windows off C:, yet chkdsk refuses to repair it because "the filesystem is RAW".

In a worst case scenario, you'll at least manage to be able to copy your stuff to a newly-acquired drive.

Can someone post the ultimate solution for fixing bad sectors, i searched a lot over the internet and everyone suggests a different software and I'm confused!
I discovered the bad sectors when doing a full scan with kaspersky, it always freezes my computer in certain points of the infected partition .... will it take very long time to scan my 640 GB partition and what's the best software to do that, keep in mind that i can use the partition normally and don't want to lose any of my data using any stupid software.

SpinRite can do a deep scan of your drive, attempt to read data placed on physically damaged areas multiple times, relocate it on healthy ones if successful, and clearly mark the bad sectors as unusable. There are five scan levels, going from 1 (a very quick and superficial check) to 5 (a very thorough one that will take at least 12 hours to finish on your 640GB partition, but most likely guarantees success).

HDD Regenerator is supposed to be able to "revive" bad sectors, which as cheatos once stated, is probably crap, but if you want to try...
