    Block internet access

    Hey guys,

Wonder if you know a program that can disable access to the internet for some applications. So I'm looking for a firewall but something light and simple. I don't want something that pops up every 2 sec that some is trying to connect or that it blocked an attack and so on. And please no suggestions about using the built-in windows firewall.

    Thanks

    Thank you both for answering.
@annon The application doesn't seem to work.

@instab I know that but the thing is that I just need to block some application to disable a serial check. For this I don't really need a full firewall functionality for something this simple. It also consumes some resources and sometimes can cause other problems to p2p application and other applications even though all of its protection is disabled.

    How did you use it?

If you create a shortcut to it and append the full path to the app whose network access you want to block to the command-line it works here.

Maybe you could just found out to which IP/hostname program connects when doing serial check and block it in hosts file. That would be most elegant way I can think of.

Its probably same hostname which connects to when it does upgrade. You can check that if you write netstat -a in the cmd while program connects to server I think. Can't help more because we don't know which application your post is about.

OPF is not so light nor so simple or popup frequently or use preset rules. It also collides with Winpcap drivers also since like v3 agnitum products are not as stable as they should be.

    @ Master Razor
Basic question - What operational system(which ver of windows and if it is 32 or 64 bit) are you using?

    Example light firewalls:
Free PC Tools Firewall Plus(set it up for not advanced user)
    or
paid Look 'n' Stop Firewall light, simple yet powerful.

PC Tools Firewall Plus - Free Firewall Download
Look 'n' Stop - Personal Firewall - Internet Security - Safety - Protection

hope you solved problem with help of any of us.

That was true many versions and years ago. The new pro version has built in rules for huge numbers of software. It also has autolearn and will adapt to all situations. Auto-learn is like set it and forget it for 1 week or more.

reboot and having run your other software...
When it comes to wanting to use your software you dont want to have call home
    turn off auto-learn
    run your app
firewall will prompt you what you wanna do, block everything that says to connect to internet or route (indirect) access to internet.

You done it. Ive done it before blocking call-home app and it was as simple as above

That's probably one of the simpler methods and should work adequately for most applications. I've had to do this to on occssion where I didn't want an application to call home. Worked pretty much all the time.

@ saebrtooth Using now 6.7.2 and 7beta2 i am not fan of autloearn nor fan opf/oss stability. There are many other lighter and simpler products. Not also sure if HIPS is needed this time. Not sure about spending money too.

I would agree with shadowww that blocking ip in hosts file is most resources friendly way to do it.

Unfortunately you have to find out ip you want to block, so the firewall is probably more practical. Everyone should use one, it's a matter of a personal hygiene

That'll only work if the app is resolving the call-home's hostname. If it contacts the IP directly, it won't work.

Thanks for all the help guys. Starting with the obvious, the nonet program that annon suggested really did work but it doesn't work on all programs due to the "not appear to be using windows sockets..." error.

On the firewall discussion, I will try outpost firewall and Look 'n' Stop Firewall (never heard of it 'till now) and I'll see. I once used outpost and It really killed the performance of my system. But that was 2 years ago and a lot of things have been corrected in these latest versions.

    @Vation I use win7 32-bit .

In the meantime, if you know some other great utilities/firewalls for this please continue to share. Thank you all
