They'll milk anything, despite of it being a cow or not

I couldn't get past the whiny smart aleck.
he sounded (more) annoying this time, like a fusion of baruchel & sandler, with barely any life in the voice, just dragged on chewing the verbal scenery

these two are not really buds/buddies, one is the master (hiccup), one a trained/tamed dragon (animal/pet, lost his bite, hence toothless)
notice also how hiccup blames the dragon for his own mistakes (hitting a mountain) and the writers give him proof with those extra set of wings the dragon never knew he had (new training result), he also makes fun of the dragon and his loyalty (right, bud?)

another silly part was hiccup's pointless verbal attempts to persuade the enemies of their wrongdoings (first he talks, then goes to war), even though adults repeatedly explain how there's no talking to the likes of drago (ivan drago, the russian - white usa, black russia) - again, the writers aid him by making him the new chief, killing off the old one and placing the mother in a subservient role

cgi in general = very good, best part of the movie
flaming sword, green gas = yawn
    mother revelation(s) = lame

their alpha controls them & feeds them - later on we notice its about mind control & feeding them thoughts - white alpha = good thoughts, black alpha = bad thoughts - the young cannot be controlled because their thoughts jump from one thing to another very fast (ADD for the young?), but somehow they can be ridden (physically controlled)

its the idea of good & bad/evil fighting over supremacy, the good winning in the end (the black one ran away) - good & bad thoughts producing good & bad actions

the black alpha wasn't bad, just controlled by a bad man - they forgot to continue and tell us who controlled the bad man

the answer was: probably nobody, he has free will (unlike the dragons who are always mind controlled), so training dragons means he has to (mind) control them into accepting his way of doing things (like physical taming of animals) and they'll be best friends, but only if its his way (or else it would be 'the highway', though viewers wouldn't enjoy seeing that part, would they?)

when toothless broke the black alpha's mind-control, he basically surrendered his will to the white man control (hiccup), whereas hiccup interprets it as 'thats how you train a dragon', just switch him from black to white side, to a different (mind) control scenario

that part of the story is about (mind) controlled dragons and humans as their dragon-masters, similar to humans being masters of their domesticated animals/dragons, while human leaders (chief) are viewed as masters of their tribe, whereas chief's own dragon (alpha) is also master of other dragons, and there can be only one alpha in either the human or dragon tribe

so we have a few kinds of 'training' here:
    - humans training their dragons (from wild animals into domesticated pets)
    - dragon-master (chief) humans training their human followers
    - alpha dragons training their subordinate dragons
    - dragon-less humans training their own armies (of own human followers?), supposedly inferior to the above

    another thing:
dragon killing - the old chief's ways (old testament, old age)
dragon taming/training/peace-making - the new chief's ways (new testament, new age)
dragon capturing/exploiting - the bad people's ways (adversaries to both)

the white side fights to achieve & protect their idea of how things should be (their idea of peace), the black side does the same (once the black side wins, there will be peace too!) - we are merely watching things through the white side eyes (whereas the scriptwriters steer the events & morals, aiding the white side as the story moves on, ensuring its victory), in other words, the white side in this movie is cheating! it was destined to win (the scriptwriters made sure of it)

also, who controlled the white alpha (before toothless took his place)?
it wasn't the old chief... was it the mother then? maybe she was meant to represent only a transient stage from the old male to the new male (rule)?

another way of looking at this is:
    - the person on this ride (who rides) = you
    - ride the dragon = travel on your journey
    - train the dragon - learn while you travel, advance on the journey (its actually you who is training or being trained!)
    - kill the dragon = finish your journey/cycle
    - dragon/serpent = symbol of a cycle (eating its tail and forming a circle, its body resembling waves, legs/wings symbolizing motion, water/circles as another related analogy)
