View Full Version : Reduce memory usage Azureus/Vuze SB-I
Like many of you will know Azureus consumes alot of resources of your PC.
This can be quite annoying if you also want to do something else on your pc except downloading.
1. Always download one of the newest Vuze SB-I mods.
Why?
Newer versions of Vuze SB-I contain newer cores of vuze and the people at vuze will always try to make vuze faster(yea I know sometimes they are just trying to make a more shiny interface).
2. Update to the newest Java verions
Why?
Newer versions of Java will contain tweaks that may make java programs faster to run.
3. Disable plugins or even delete them.
why?
Plugins use lots of recourses
Disable:
Tools -> options -> plugins
Uncheck all the plugins that you don't need.
Remove:
Plugins -> Uninstallation wizard.
uncheck all the plugins that you don't need.
Q: I don't know witch plugins are safe to delete/disable
A: It's safe to delete/disable the following plugins:
3dView
advanced statics
azureus blog
peer injector
Rating
chat
country locator
monitoring plugin
rssfeed
seeding columns
And especially
safepeer //uses alot of recourses it's better to just use an external IPblocker like PeerGuardian or the one that anon posted
advanced statics
4. Disable Logging
It will probably already been unchecked, but for the people where it's not unchecked.
disable logging under Tools -> options -> Logging
5. switch to the classic UI under Tools -> Options -> Interface -> Start -> GUI Chooser
6. set your disk cache size under Tools -> Options -> Files -> Performance Options to reasonable settings (4MB cache, 1MB read queue, 1MB write queue) //I personally didn't tried this one so if it don't work just PM me and I will remove it from the list.
7. in case you have enabled the save peer connections feature under tools -> options -> files either disable it (but not the Fast Resume mode) or set a reasonable limit... something that equals the number of peer max. connections. //Also didn't tested this one.
8. make sure the built-in tracker is disabled by unchecking both Enable Tracker on ... options under tools -> options -> tracker -> server
9. create a link that calls Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m to launch Azureus with a JVM heap size that's restricted to 64MB
9.1. Create a shortcut
9.2. Right click on the shortcut and then properties.
9.3. Then in the target box do Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m just like in the picture below.
http://www.sb-innovation.de/attachment.php?attachmentid=3115
After you did it just restart Azureus.
Reference:
Reduce memory usage - AzureusWiki (http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Reduce_memory_usage)
If you know any other tweak that does work and is not listed here please post it and I will include it into this post.
When you click on the link I included at reference you will see some extra tips.
I didn't included those because.
1. I didn't tested it.
2. I didn't tough it wouldn't make a difference.
If one of the tips work and really make an difference that is on the reference page please post and I will include it into this post.
Edit: Changed the SS of the shortcut because it's probably wrong(now it's correct).
Thanks anon for that.
Well Done buddy :top: It's always nice to see more well made TuTs around here, inform me if you needed any help posting them/arranging titles
Will make some nicer/clearer headers/titles when I got some more time.
9. create a link that calls Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m to launch Azureus with a JVM heap size that's restricted to 64MB
I have to do this on desktop shourtcut?
Yes, make a shortcut and add the parameter(s) at "Target".
Nice tutorial, Logitech
This comes specially useful for people that have low-end computers or are using download boxes. And even if you have a last-generation PC, Azureus has no reason for it to use loads of RAM and CPU when, as you have proven, it can do a lot better.
I can give you a hand with "dressing up" the article too... :top:
Edit: @yoco: also make sure you're placing the parameter outside the quotes that enclose the EXE's path in the shortcut. For example:
OK:
"C:\Program Files\Vuze\Azureus.exe" -J-Xmx64m
Wrong:
"C:\Program Files\Vuze\Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m"
Wrong:
"C:Program FilesVuzeAzureus.exe -J-Xmx64m"
I never had any problem with doing it that way but for the people that get problems with that you can do the "Right" way.
I personally just tried the 'wrong' way and got a "error: file not found" message, but as you have said this may not always be the case for everyone :)
Yea I did like that.
About Java update. Is there an option that it updates automaticly?
Note: This feature is available only on Windows XP, 2003, 2000 (SP2 or higher) and set by default for these operating systems.
1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click Java icon. The Java Control Panel appears.
3. Click the Update tab.
Note: The Update tab may not be available if your network administrator has disabled the Java Update feature during installation.
4. To enable Java Update to automatically check for updates, select the Check for Updates Automatically check box.
5. To disable Java Update, un-select the Check for Updates Automatically check box.

No problem yoco.
I'm glad that i can finally do something for the forum.
I'm glad that i can finally do something for the forum.
Thumbs up! http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/8603/ayde8.gif
I have C2D and 2GB 800mhz ddr2 ram.:tongue:and ram is really cheap today
Under performance options i gave size of cache 32MB,
5MB read queue, 5MB write queue
And i use safepeer with blocklist manager updates.is this okay?
Yea and what about upnp media, disable or enable?
i think azureus update supports plugins can we also disable
Under performance options i gave size of cache 32MB,
5MB read queue, 5MB write queue
32MB is the absolute recommended maximum. I'd set it to 10-16 MB: it is pretty much enough, even for people with very fast connections maxing their speeds, but it will reduce your RAM usage considerably.
4MB or less should be more than good for the read and write queues.
And i use safepeer with blocklist manager updates.is this okay?
Do you have to use specifically Safepeer for some reason? If not, I recommend you uninstall it and use P2PFire instead (which uses very little resources ), so as to make Azureus use even less memory.
Yea and what about upnp media, disable or enable?
i think azureus update supports plugins can we also disable
If you don't need UPnP disable it, for security and performance reasons.
As regarding Azureus Update, that'd depend on whether you want your plugins to be auto-updated or not...
Ups, cant uninstall without update support plugins
Oh, you meant the Azureus Update plugin. I understood "Azureus updating plugins", sorry
Yes, it's better if that plugin is left enabled. Otherwise there can be problems like the one you mentioned.
---
By the way, as we were talking about updates, have you disabled automatic update checking? So that the new official updates don't overwrite the hack...
Tools -> Options -> Interface (left side) -> Start
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/7970/autouppk9.gif
Dont worry i have.but i can stil download some plugins?they will not interfere with hack.Right?
Yes, you can still add plugins.
They won't interfere with the mod.
Hey, did I do this right?
http://shrani.si/f/45/Yj/1CD17Xeo/vuze.jpg
When I opened Azureus some kinda error was showing, but it's working normally. I'll post the error screenshoot when I finish download a file.
EDIT: This is the error
http://shrani.si/t/D/Y0/2MRKnJI7/vuze2.jpg (http://shrani.si/?D/Y0/2MRKnJI7/vuze2.jpg)
yoco if Azureus is now using +-64mb it probably did worked.
If not you just need to do "E:\Razni Programi\Azureus\Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m" without the quotes("").
Sorry that It now sounds a bit confusion, but I hope you understand what I mean.
Yea I understand. While downloading the usage was about 90mb. And when I try without the quotes, it won't let me.
@yoco: it's
-J-Xmx64m
not
J-Xmx64m
You forgot the trailing dash... add it and try making the shortcut the "right" way I posted before.
LOL :klatsch_3:
Thank you Anon :top: Such small mistake
I don't use the shortcut.
I have removed all the plugins that I posted in my main post and my Azureus doesn't exceed the 64mb line even when I don't use the shortcut.
Azureus is running 1 download and 1 fake upload.
the thing with the shortcut is a restriction. if you are below than you dont need itbut if your azureus eats more you should use it
@hit: that's right :smile:
For example, should Azureus need to use more than 64MB of RAM for itself while using the shortcut, it'll do things like flushing its disk buffers, unloading things it hasn't used lately or won't need from memory, etc... so that memory usage is always at 64M or below.
I don't use the shortcut.

Well my guess would be that you have way way better PC than me. Mine's like 6 or 7 years old, can't even remember :rolleyes2::redface:

You sure did a good work keeping it working :)
(post your specs )
AMD Athlon 2100+
512MB ram
GeForce 6600 256mb
OS: Microsoft Windows XP SP2
Well, you do have a better GFX card than me though.
Which one is the correct one?
http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/721/az2fy8.jpg http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/1035/az1ro3.jpg
See the quote ("")
wow. that was fast...I just checked the picture from the first post. and yes it is the second one.
just want to make sure :)
Well, you do have a better GFX card than me though.
:lol_5:
You're crackin me up Anon :biggrinflip:
Well, it's true ... I have a GeForce 5200 FX :frown:
It's still perfect for my normal gaming activities though.
Well, it's true ... I have a GeForce 5200 FX :frown:

i can top you i have only a geforce 4 and a 1,6 ghz amd a truly oldtimer
for gaming i have a ps3 and x360 that enough. azureus and other apps are working fine for me
i can top you i have only a geforce 4 and a 1,6 ghz amd a truly oldtimer
Surely you have some good old memories from using it?
for gaming i have a ps3 and x360 that enough. azureus and other apps are working fine for me
Both consoles have 3.2Ghz processors, so that kind of keeps stuff balanced.
And that's true, there's no need for an AMD 10000+ and 10GB of RAM if you only do normal stuff in the computer
P.S: maybe you win this battle, but I still have my K6-2 dropped somewhere... :cool2:
I have to say it, this still isn't working for me :mad2: Goes easly over 100mb when 2 or more torrents are open. Sometimes even with only 1. Don't know what could be the problem, it worked fine with 3.0.5.2. God I hate my PC :icon_angry[1]:
Maybe you can do a clean install and apply the tweaks again.
By the way, can you post your current settings, specially the disk cache ones?
I disabled every plugin you said, my disk cache
http://shrani.si/t/16/EZ/2o1P1rIJ/azureus.jpg (http://shrani.si/?16/EZ/2o1P1rIJ/azureus.jpg)
Anything else?
Set the disk cache's size to 10MB, and the last two values at the bottom to 1MB.
You're of course still applying the command-line tweak, right?
Hej Yoco old buddy, maybe i can help you.my azureus shows in task manager about 45000K when i upload two torrents.i have disabled dht, using old azureus UI and disabled some plugins.think that safepeer is using highest amount.
just disabled safepeer,not uninstaled yet
http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/8341/19zi8.png (http://imageshack.us)
Hope i help you!:wink2:
I use the following plugins (they are all deselected, but I don't know if I did it or that thas was default)
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6844/pluginus7.jpg (http://img148.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pluginus7.jpg)
Hey buddy! These are mine plugins
http://shrani.si/f/30/Hw/1T0l1Epa/plugins.jpg
I only have the Update Patcher and Client ID plugins enabled. All others are disabled (and uninstalled, whenever possible). Along the heapsize trick, it's the best way to save RAM
So you think I should uninstall all the plugins I've disabled?
Uninstall.I think azureus still searches for available plugins and that slows him down.
ok, I'll try and post the result.
EDIT: What abou that "Geo Map"? Can it be disabled/uninstalled?
I'm seeding one torrent and it's using abou 75mb
What abou that "Geo Map"? Can it be disabled/uninstalled?
Disable countrylocator plugin.and you will not see flags in peer list.

well i think The HeapSize method of Reducing memory Usage doesnt works For NEwer Versions of Vuze Now....
It should still work. Are you using the JAR or single EXE?
And you may need to combine it with the other things described in the first post (lower disk cache, etc.) for it to reduce usage.

well i have replaced the Single EXe .rar files with d original ones & using this method on That file..
I Did all as mentioned in d first post....
Vuze Gives " OPEN Error"
like
'x64m' could not be opened : not a file.
it gave me 8 same messages for different filenames.
There should be a file called Azureus.l4j.ini in the same folder as the EXE. Open and edit it:
# Azureus runtime parameter
#
# e.g.:
# -Xms16m
# -Dsomevar="%SOMEVAR%"
# -Dswing.aatext=true
-J-Xmx64m
Then save it. This has the same effect as the command-line tweak when using the single EXE.

ok when i Did like u Said... After that VUZe Doesnt Open at all , neither does it loads in d memory lol...
I think i Will stick to using it as it was earlier...
This is a Specific Problem in my Case as it was with you for Single EXE.
Wait, I think I made a mistake. Replace the last line with:
-Xmx64m

thanX it Really worked...buddy. no Problem...
Why don't you use Azureus own ip-filter instead of Safepeer?
Strange that none has mentioned this.
Azureus didn't have a built-in IPFilter at the time this tutorial was written.
Sorry, didn't look at the dates.

i read on the wiki to use a different file,
VM Options file (windows only)
-J options specified on the command line won't be preserved over an Azureus restart. To ensure they are place them into a file called Azureus.exe.vmoptions in the same directory as the Azureus.exe. In this case simply place each command on a separate line in the file, without the -J. For example
Azureus.exe.vmoptions
-Dazureus.lazy.bitfield=1
-Xmx192m
Commandline options - AzureusWiki (http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Commandline_options#VM_Options_file_.28windows_onl y.29)
so is it Azureus.l4j.ini or Azureus.exe.vmoptions? i am using the Single exe of 4.2.0.3_B19 on winxp sp3.
the single exe is adjusted by ghostfucker, you have to use the Azureus.l4j.ini instead of making a shortcut from the exe and write it there. its with the Azureus.l4j.ini more confortable and you can even add the command for the cutom path config folder
so is it Azureus.l4j.ini or Azureus.exe.vmoptions? i am using the Single exe of 4.2.0.3_B19 on winxp sp3.
.l4j.ini.
Remember I made a mistake on the post you quoted. The last line should be:
-Xmx64m
and not:
-J-Xmx64m
i never knew i could change the config folder. when i use,
-Dazureus.config.path=%APPDATA%\Azureus4
it doesn't even load. but if i use the full path it works.
-Dazureus.config.path="C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Azureus4"
how do i get it so that i can use the %APPDATA% instead of the full path.?
-Dazureus.config.path=%APPDATA%Azureus4
Try enclosing the path between quotes too.
copy the config folder in the folder where the azureus.exe is and put in the ini this line
-Dazureus.config.path=".\Azureus"
it should load the config folder directly from it and you can make even 2 or 3 different azureus version with different settings thats how im using it since im sometimes too lazy to change the settings over the GUI

this works best for me as i see the single exe is like a portable version, but you need java installed. now my config folder is in the same folder as the exe.
thanks!!

can Someone Suggest me the updated list of latest plugins that can be disabled / uninstalled safely Without interfering With the proper Working of Vuze......?
Pretty much all of them. The necessary ones are greyed out, or reenable themselves after restarting Vuze.

Anon,
I dont find any file whit the exact description "Azureus.l4j.ini" in Vuze.exe folder nor in the sub-folders nor hidden? However, i have found
the following files i4jparams.ini and i4jruntime.ini in the .install4j folder !?
I guess this is yet another "better" method to use conserve memory !?
Do i need to put in all the above parameters ?
which method do you use anyway, and does it both work for you ?
In my case the shortcut method has proven not to work in the long run !
cheers,
kab,
The Azureus.l4j.ini thing is only for when you use the single EXE version. If you're using the JAR, you have to do the command-line tweak described in the first post. But if it doesn't work... well, you could try using the single EXE.

Are you refering to the portable version of Azureus !
Wot do you actually mean by "using the single.exe"
kab,
There's a "single EXE" version in the Vuze Beta thread - look in the attachments...

Oh my... bad
lol...
I know wot you mean lol... Its just i always have used the .jar version up untill now i didnt noticed the .exe anymore ...!
So, i guess the single exe is the full install of the modified Vuze a.k.a XtremeMod !?
Why are there 2 seperate install methods anyway ? I mean, is the exe more stable or anything , more features !?
thanks for pointing out the obvious anon
kabster,
The only difference is that single EXE has all the JARs wrapped inside it - you can run it from anywhere. But I thought it may solve your problem, give it a try...

yes, i just noticed "single.exes" act as a portable version. Making it possible to use different builds of vuze whitout the need to re-install/re-config the whole shazaam :top:
thanks,
kab,
yes, i just noticed "single.exes" act as a portable version.
It can be made almost fully portable with shoulder's config folder trick, but you still need the JRE installed.
well, not quite as an portable since it probebly needs the config folders from an initial install earlier , is that about right ?
You can tell it to use a custom folder with this trick:
http://www.sb-innovation.de/showthread.php?threadid=4055
But the command-line parameter must be used as an entry in the INI file.

Of course I want, your feedback helps everyone. Cheers!
hi,
Just checked sourceforge for any changes made to vuze.
I have read of build 4.2.0."4" and 4.2.0."5" but cant find any link to download !!
How does that work?
Are those versions they"ve announced not yet released !!?
If so, thats odd cause the release date has expired (so it seems) !?
Also, so far it doesnt look like vuze will settle whit less memory using the single.exe method :frown:

They are CVS cores. You can find the changelogs for stable versions here (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/changelog.php).
Too bad about the memory thing. :frown:

I know annon, i got the info from there in the first place actually . But thanks anyway :top:
CVS cores are useless to us users i gather !? And are meant for poeple whit programming skills , right? So, if i understand correct the Beta releases are based on the latest CVS cores right!
Too bad about the memory thing. :frown:
Yeah , dont remind me anon .
Say, did digitalDj and co took a peek at this memory issue annon?
Havent they found anything as to why this is happening ?
thanks,

Well, they include the latest bleeding-edge fixes. If you want to keep up with these, they're useful.
Our coders focus on improving the cheating/spoofing features. It's the Vuze developers that should fix bugs like yours

Yeah... Tell me about it
kab,
Because they haven't been fully tested.
Because they haven't been fully tested.
uhrm... Arent we already testing by using Beta releases, hence beta !!?
I have a distinct feeling , you are talking about them testing builds/versions prior to beta release!! Am i right ?
urs truly,
kab,
I have a distinct feeling , you are talking about them testing builds/versions prior to beta release!! Am i right ?
Yes, kind of. What I meant is that while they usually aren't unstable, they also haven't been proven to be fully stable.

I always thought thats exactly why we home users are there for :klatsch_3:
To prove their wrong
kab,
9. create a link that calls Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m to launch Azureus with a JVM heap size that's restricted to 64MB
this don't work for me, program don't opened after that.
If I'm not mistaking you must put -J-Xmx64m into shortcut. I have it on my desktop and it works fine!
I put this and vuze don't open ...
Did you put it in Azureus.exe?
http://img235.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=01826_1_122_167lo.JPG
and after openin the vuze
http://img242.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=01828_2_122_522lo.JPG
Open your shortcut properties and on "target" field enclose everything between quotes (") but the -J-Xmx64m parameter. That should work. :top:
example:
"c:\SB-I_Hack_Azureus2_4.2.0.5_B06_DDJ_Single_exe\Azureus .exe" -J-Xmx64m
I add " and after applyng it's disappear...
It doesn't work because you're using the single EXE. To quote myself:
There should be a file called Azureus.l4j.ini in the same folder as the EXE. Open and edit it:
# Azureus runtime parameter
#
# e.g.:
# -Xms16m
# -Dsomevar="%SOMEVAR%"
# -Dswing.aatext=true
-Xmx64m
Then save it. This has the same effect as the command-line tweak.
Hello, new here so I'm sorry if I'm doing something wrong.
Can I use the shortcut conf with Azureus 2.5.0.4? I'm trying to, but 2 torrents seeding, it goes above 64 too, at times, like 66-8, is that normal? Right now when I check, it has come down to 52 again. So am I OK here and it won't rise 100 MB+ even if I add loads of torrents, or would it?
Thanks for your time. Excellent tutorial if it really works.

To be honest, I haven't tried it on 2.5.0.4, but I guess it has to work.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I followed the cache tips, too. I suppose I'll have to see. Few more torrents going to be added tonight, will see how it goes when there's like 10+ of 'em for starters.
Thanks again.
No problem, and don't forget we have this button: http://www.sb-innovation.de/enlighten/buttons_eng_10/thanks.gif

My VEM goes above 100 (200+ incl java) most of the time. The more plugins u enable the more memory VEM will use. VEM will more memory than the original VUZE but this is normal.
My emule SBI (thx Butcho) use about 400-500 MB (2000+ files being qued) ram but when I have about 30 qued emule uses about 50mb ram then goes down usuage after some time. my firefox usuge uses much more than this
Some tweaks will reduced memory usuage but may use more disc space and reduce responsivness. Im not sure if this tweak is like this however. The best thing to do is upgrade some ram maybe it will only cost $20-$30 but removes a lot of headache.
Thanks for your time. Excellent tutorial if it really works.
This is a bit like a person saying todays temperature will be exactly in the range of 8oC and 15.7oC and then you replying to that person say "you're a genius if you get it right". Sorry I had to say this one ;)
jk lol

Ha-ha, good one. Made me laugh first time today :top: Yeah, I know I have to upgrade memory, with costs nowadays it'd do me most good with minimal cash output. But I won't have really time to mess around with all this until summer, so that's why I'm looking for workarounds right now. I'd really love to only use Azureus. At least seeding stuff actually works the way one sets it up with Az, uT pretty much lives its own life in that regard.

I thought it Azureus was the infamous one given its default queueing settings

What can I say. Take single files, ie uploaded new episodes of running TV shows. With uT I quite often have the problem of either 1) torrent seeding for some time and afterwards just sits there, with nothing happening - week passes but I don't even have 1:1 ratio yet, 2) though that happened quite some time ago, not anymore now, uT randomly kept torrents that hadn't gathered needed ratio yet qued, and well, once they were active again, look point 1 above, and 3) For reasons unknown to me, uT seems to choose some new torrents and seed the f out of them, like 3+ or even 4+ ratio, basically above and beyond what one could hope; but why doesn't it do it for each file, why does it so randomly neglect some. I've never understood.
in Az, on another hand, I set the exact ratio and the program starts to work towards those files that haven't reached the aim yet, no exceptions.
Dunno, perhaps I'm doing something terribly wrong with uT, but after several years of using it and trying a lot of different configurations, it's doubtful.

I'm assuming you used the same max. connection settings, upload slots, etc. on both clients?

Indeed I did, yes. ;)
Oh well, updates...
Doesn't seem to work out for me. 30 torrents seeding now, and Az seems to sit at 100MB, even little bit more at times.
Hrm, and now it jumped down to 88-9. I don't get it, at all. Does this suggested config still maintain the size somehow?

It does, but if Azureus needs more RAM for its operations I guess Java simply can't deny it. But memory usage would probably be higher without the tweaks.
9. create a link that calls Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m to launch Azureus with a JVM heap size that's restricted to 64MB
9.1. Create a shortcut
9.2. Right click on the shortcut and then properties.
9.3. Then in the target box do Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m just like in the picture below.

After you did it just restart Azureus.
hi guys, I am just wondering if the above needs to be updated to the latest vuze SB-1 version as I don't c a file called Azureus.l4j.ini in the program folder only this Azureus.exe.vmoptions.
another thing, I guess the safepeer plugin is no longer supported as per https://plugins.vuze.com/plugin_details.php?plugin=safepeer
I don't know, I thought I should mention it.
