Lionhead and MS finally announced the release date of Fable II - October 21st. The press release goes on to say all sorts of wonderful things about the game and how emotionally gut-wrenching it will be...sure. In addition to the self-promoting of the story-line, they also had this
Fable II pioneers a new combat system designed to allow players to truly master hand weapons, ranged combat weapons and magic, each using a different single button on the Xbox 360 controller, making the game approachable and accessible to both casual and hardcore gamers. Players will live out personal and emotional experiences like never before, whether playing solo or co-op together with a friend or over Xbox LIVE, with their constant dog companion by their side
Interesting, "pioneers" is a strong word. The Wiimote pioneered motion controls (successfully that is) for games, could this be as revolutionary? Probably not, that's why they went with pioneer no doubt. Still, with all the buttons you have on an Xbox 360 controller, you should be able to do some new and interesting things with them to make it less of a mashing-through-the-buttons-till-you-find-the-right-weapon exercise. Really, should changing weapons or objects be like trying to text message on a phone without a full keyboard? Have we not come further than that? Are we just animals? No damn-it, we have opposable thumbs!
We're getting off track here. The game also features a co-op mode that should make people with friends happy - we don't have friends so we don't' care. What we do care about is the killer little Hobbe dolls you get with the collectors edition. Sweet, sort of like anime nightmares come to life.
