Ten minutes before the biggest race Ryan Lochte had ever known, he poked his head over a chain link fence and called out to his father.

Lochte was standing near the spot where Michael Phelps tearfully held his first Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games and declared “I did it!” to his mother and two sisters. Now here was Lochte, looking over the same fence into the eyes of his father, an intimate moment between a hard-headed swimmer and his patient coach.

With an Olympic gold medal at stake in the 200 individual medley, what could Lochte have to say? Maybe he needed advice? Or perhaps he wanted to deliver a heartfelt thank-you for all the help? Maybe a last-minute declaration of love? Steve Lochte was all ears.

“Dad, do you have 70 euros?”
