LOS ANGELES (TICKER) —The only seeded player in action Monday, No. 6 Mardy Fish defeated Colombian Alejandro Falla, 6-2, 6-2, on the first day at the $475,000 Countrywide Classic.

Fish of the United States is looking for his first title in 2008 after reaching the final at Indian Wells in March. He will face the winner two unseeded players, fellow American Vincent Spadea and Sebastien Grosjean of France, in the second round.

Top-seeded Andy Roddick didn’t fare as well the last time he was in California, suffering a second-round loss at Indian Wells. He aims to avoid a similar fate here.

The 25-year-old Roddick, who has endured an up-and-down season, has a bye into the second round of the 28-player hardcourt event. As such, he needs to win only two matches to reach the semifinals, with his first match either against Serbian Dusan Vemic or American qualifier Sam Warburg.
