Hey There Guys !! Hope you are doing fine  Same Day,Same Sh%t !! Being @ work for 7 hours now & want my shift time to end up so that I get to my humble crazy PC  Anyway, while i was setting bored I just wanted to post this topic just to provide a simple guide for people who got fed up with silly Ads that keep poping up everywhere & anywhere you surf the web !! So here we go again :

1. How Does Browsing Work ?

When you type in a url into the address bar of your browser, it sends a request to a server which changes the (text.com) into an ip address. The browser then asks the ip address that holds the website files to send them back to be viewed in your browser.

This is also true for adverts, spywares and phishing sites. Like the 'you are a winner' advert. A server turns the (www.text.whatever) into an ip address and then when you connect it downloads files to your PC to track your online activities.

But XP/Vista (which what 95% of the WEB surfers use .) has a way around this. It looks at a local file on your harddrive first to confirm the incoming connection then take the action to pop up the Ad,the complete process goes as follows :

Ex: Google

browser:windows what is the ip address for google?
Windows: i dont know.
browser: server what is the ip address of google?
server:64.233.183.104
browser: ok 64.233.183.104 can i have the google website files plz

The file that windows uses to determine ip addresses is called your lmhosts file.

This is just a plain text list of "www.text.whatever" and their associated ip addresses.

2. How is this all Related ?

Well if you make all the Ads ip address as 127.0.0.1 then you will never contact their proper servers and you will never get Spam/Adverts again.Though no Spyware or Tracker Cookies will ever be loaded onto your PC.

3. How do I know what sites to add and where is the file stored ?

You can follow the simple steps below to Replace your current lmhosts file with a finely tuned one from the internet.

1. Go to hpHosts Online - Simple, Searchable & FREE! (http://www.hosts-file.net/?s=Download) and Download hosts.zip (should be first download.)

2. Extract HOSTS.TXT to the correct folder for your operating system.

For :

- Windows XP/2003/Vista

c:/windows/system32/Drivers/Etc

For :

- Windows NT/2000

c:/windows/system32/Drivers/Etc

For :

- Windows 95/98/Me

c:/windows/

If it asked you to Replace the Current File,Hit "Yes or OK" !!

Good News : If You did exactly as mentioned in this TuT,then say "Bye Bye Adies" Instead you will get "Page Not Found" as if you loaded a wrong page or mis-typed a link !! :top:

Hope You NJoy Hitting This Trick Guys,Inform me anything went wrong !! :top:

here you get just blankspace where the ad would be ^^

note this tut is valid for all ad-blocking HOSTS files you can find on the net

here's a little list of such...
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
Block Adverts (http://hostsfile.mine.nu/)
Mike's Ad Blocking Hosts file (http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html)
SCoooBY's AD-BLOCKING HOSTS file (http://members.dialmaine.com/drdole/#hosts)

and this one (http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/) at someonewhocares.org is HUGE (hosts files larger than 100kb can affect performance)...... you have to copy and paste the contents inside your current file, here's how

1. start -> run
2. type
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/1263/74081368cy5.gif
(notice the dot at the end)
3. press ENTER; your current hosts file's contents will appear
4. edit -> select all and delete everything (to avoid conflicts with other ad-blocking HOSTS you may have installed)
5. paste the contents of the SWC.org article i've linked to above
6. file -> save

done

again thanks for another great tutorial :top: this is very useful for people that want to block banners and such but don't feel like installing one of those ad-blocker programs which can be invasive and difficult to use :klatsch_3:

run

ipconfig /flushdns
(start -> run -> type that and press ENTER)

between each hosts-file test so that you can be 100% that if you don't see an ad it's because your current HOSTS file blocked it and not DNS cache leftovers from other blockers
