Ares Galaxy is an open source P2P file sharing application that uses its own decentralized supernode/leaf network. It was spun-off from the Gnutella network in 2002, and is currently hosted on SourceForge.net. Ares Galaxy has a simple, quick access interface with a built in audio/video viewer. The latest versions also support the BitTorrent protocol and Shoutcast radio stations.

There's also an unofficial v2.0.9.3033 (attached).

*Mod* - Removed Browser.
*Mod* - MediaDefender blocked.
*Mod* - Changed some default client settings.
*Fix* - Unicode name saving fixed.
*Fix* - Proxy support fixed (still needs some work, doesn't work on friends pc but does on my own).

(Original thread: 404 Not Found)

With this version, you can see the IPs of other users in the search results and download panel. This is good because if you see a search result with hundreds of users coming from just 2 different subnets, you know it's a fake

Hi anon

It works alright, but there's no ares in my Vista! It opens on startup and when I shut it down and try to open it again abracadabra there's no ares.

Any idea?

Thanks

You could try search for Ares in Program Files and then make a shortcut for it on the desktop.

Check if ares.exe is still running after you close it...
v2.0.9 has this kind of issues with Vista, you can use v1.9 but it doesn't have the view user IPs thingy to detect fakes. :/

Change log:

* New UDP chat channel list
* Improved connectivity, removal of cacheservers
* Added new skins (thanks to Daniel and George)
* Added russian translation (thanks to nis)
* Added Mouse-Middle-button click to select chat nicknames
* Fixed: nickname's unicode chars properly displayed in control panel

There don't seem to be any important changes (maybe this improved connectivity, but old versions can still connect instantly to the network with an up-to-date SNodes.dat), so I'd say you could keep the old unofficial 2.0.9.3033 build to see other users' IPs and detect fake files. Anyway, N.Devil (the unofficial version's developer) has long stated that the Ares network is/will be dead from his point of view, and therefore most likely won't update his hack anymore.

i don't know , for me is ares to slow. it only connects with max 10 peers ..
is there a way to get more speed or peers ?

anon

The General -> Personal details -> Speed setting controls how many peers you can connect to. Choosing a faster connection type means more connections. I have set it to "DSL" and it downloads fast.

Also, make sure you limit your upload speed to 80% of the maximum, to avoid saturating it.

First post updated with unofficial version, all old nodesets deleted.

By the way, Ares 2.1.4 is out.

No changelog, as almost always.

Thanks, I wonder why they never post the changelog. I'm sticking with the unofficial version myself.

Beats me.I couldn't find any either.Maybe because they don't make so many changes??:confused2: But that would sound stupid.

I'd release the changelog even if it's just a few lines regarding "bugfixes". But most of the changes are probably for the chat part of the program, which I don't use.

Is anyone here using Ares still? It was really massive years ago (and this thread, one of my first, stands as a monument to that), but then fake files and spam started taking over. If I were to judge by the amount of search results, I'd say two thirds of its old userbase have abandoned it. Nonetheless, I keep my install configured and working, and use it to find single songs sometimes (haven't found a good Groovedown replacement so far).

Note that versions after 2.3.1.3055 removed the bundled skins, ability to disconnect from the network and the "my PC is firewalled" checkbox, and have a few bugs on top of that (the media player buttons don't initially appear, "pause/unpause all" doesn't actually affect all downloads), so I can't recommend them. You can download 2.3.1 here (http://filehippo.com/download_ares_galaxy/62541/).

Also, I'm attaching a Vista skin I found a long time ago, and kept updating to make it work on each subsequent release :wtongue:
