Same opinion here. Loved the original, hate this version. It's not good. Don't watch it unless you really have to.
If you're interested in the story, check out Genroku Chűshingura (1941) - IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033654/)

Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure

on the contrary, keanu stars in yet another painfully bad movie, similar to his previous one called 'Man of Tai Chi' - seems keanu hasn't made a recommendable/decent movie since 2005 (Constantine ) or 2008 (The Day the Earth Stood Still) - for him, the future brings probably more of the same: 'knock, knock, john wick'? :ouch:

earlier movie versions of this theme/topic would include:

Ronin (1998) uninspired thriller featuring numerous european-style (raw, cheap, rather uninteresting) car chases and sleep-walking actors
The 47 Ronin (1941) don't remember seeing it, though sounds boring, judging by the comment below:

I was profoundly disappointed in this film. It is 3 hour and 40+ minutes long and not much of anything happens in it. People just sit on the floor in various rooms and say things like what are we going to do, what does so and so think, I'm not sure, maybe we should ask someone else, I don't know, do you know, I'm so confused, etc. This goes on ad nauseum literally for hours.

I will search for u through a thousand worlds and 10,000 lifetimes to fcuk you

lol, typical hollywood (mis)interpretation of the reincarnation cycle (note: in this regard, eastern moviemakers are not too far behind either)

The only good thing in this movie is upholding of samurai code (bushido) and the act of dying honorable by seppuku.

bushido might have a number of honorable elements, but it is also contradictory to its main guiding philosophies (confucianism/zen), which is obviously inexcusable for any such code, thus it is very likely that those who originally transferred this code into writing were more interested in raising mindlessly obedient soldiers, as opposed to ones using their ethics/wisdom to assess the validity of their own mission in life and that of their master/employer

seppuku, as either a severe punishment or intentional suicide again misses the mark of zen by going against its main goal (attainment of enlightenment) - obviously, in both cases a chance to achieve this goal is terminated (or more correctly: postponed), especially since there is no pressing need for executing the individual in question (unlike, say, in an ongoing battle/war) and it goes against several bushido virtues as well

You need to remember it's a movie from 1941... That pretty much describes most decent movies from that era. IMDB usually punishes movies just for being asian, and it still scores 7.5.

One could argue that 12 angry men is just 12 people sitting around talking, not doing anything. But it's far from boring.

@Sazzy:

maybe asian ones at the time, not so much mainstream movies of the era (being very 'talky' might be more in common than being very long or very boring or very slow)
overlong/extra-slow movies are usually a sign of pretentious cinematography, so they better have some (really) good stuff in order to be able to get away with it

IMDB usually punishes movies just for being asian, and it still scores 7.5.

actually, imdb often 'rewards' movies if they are asian (automatically thought of as 'better than hollywood', low standards get easily overlooked, pc not allowing for harsher reviews, cult cinema with its own audience,...)
...or if they are old or from known directors, if famous, if 'high brow' and for many other reasons that aren't particularly related to some general idea of entertainment value

One could argue that 12 angry men is just 12 people sitting around talking, not doing anything. But it's far from boring.

if '12 ones' got stretched to twice that length, if filled with repetitive dialogue, if lacking a certain captivating dynamic, if filled with contents having exotic characteristics,... it would be (way) less famous than it is right now (unless ofc some of those 'wild card' reasons enter the scene)

What about 2001: A space odyssey?

...guess they got away with it:

88. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
pro's: great atmosphere, regardless of the depicted environment
con's: very slow
verdict: for the patient ones

far behind? u should try bollywood sometime?

was thinking about 'far eastern' (china...japan), but you're right, bollywood really is another level of wtf (should be safe to conclude: a wide-range, overproducing, mind-numbing & dumbing-down machinery, being a hollywood equivalent in that sense as well)
