Inspired by the true story that captured the hearts of people across the world, the rescue adventure Big Miracle tells the amazing tale of a small town news reporter (John Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Drew Barrymore) who are joined by rival world superpowers to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. Local newsman Adam Carlson (Krasinski) can't wait to escape the northern tip of Alaska for a bigger market. But just when the story of his career breaks, the world comes chasing it, too. With an oil tycoon, heads of state and hungry journalists descending upon the frigid outpost, the one who worries Adam the most is Rachel Kramer (Barrymore). Not only is she an outspoken environmentalist, she's also his ex-girlfriend. With time running out, Rachel and Adam must rally an unlikely coalition of Inuit natives, oil companies and Russian and American military to set aside their differences and free the whales. As the world's attention turns to the top of the globe, saving these endangered animals becomes a shared cause for nations entrenched against one another and leads to a momentary thaw in the Cold War.

how can you miss that, eh?

to save a family of majestic gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice

whales trapped by ice? unlikely, but i guess it happens (i'm pretty sure it was impossible to accurately estimate whether they really were trapped)
rapidly forming ice? could it be winter-time perhaps?
by saving those whales they actually aided in the destruction of thousands of other organisms (whale food), how's that for a miracle

an unlikely coalition of Inuit natives, oil companies and Russian and American military to set aside their differences and free the whales.

thats the bottom line, unite to 'save nature' (which doesn't need saving in the first place, never has and never will, no matter what happens), forget about who actually started, continued & profited from large-scale destruction & exploitation (ie. give them a free pass), just join hands and delude yourselves a little longer, for in a such state one is an easy target for those setting up & preparing to exploit the gullible masses, this time under the banner of environmentalism, just as it has been (and still is) the case under a plethora of other banners (capitalism, communism, progress, religion, nationalism, socialism, tribalism,...)

As the world's attention turns to the top of the globe, saving these endangered animals becomes a shared cause for nations entrenched against one another and leads to a momentary thaw in the Cold War.

what a joke, the nations (meaning their leaders, ones responsible for their political decisions) couldn't care less about some whales and these whales can't do anything influential regarding the cold war, though their situation (if truthful at all) can certainly be used for multiple goals that will serve well those who created, continued & profited from the cold war or any other global scenario and those looking to use & abuse the events to further their own agendas

finally, its not about whales or nature or humans, its about power, profit & control, which may very well be the case for some of the people involved in the making/approving/releasing of this movie
