Usenet is a giant network of "news groups" where people can talk about stuff, like in forums. The ability to create and fetch binary posts has allowed it to work as a way of downloading files. Normally you have to pay for access, but this server lets you leech for free at a maximum speed of 1Mbit.

Even thou I googled I still don't have a clue what this Usenet is!
It is a new way to download series movies .... with hide speeds (max) , like torrent but without seeders and leechers and usually it's not free !
I hope I am right

anon
do you have 2 accounts there ??

Its Old. Older than Torrent, older than OCH, older than napster. I think even older as FTP...

OCHs are relatively young, 2005-2006 I think.

Yes, Usenet was used for communication, way before things like forums existed.
But nowadays it's mainly associated with payed highspeed downloads, keyword alt.binaries.

thanks for this. whts OCH?
OCH are One Click Hoster, Rapidshare and that kind of stuff.

anon
09.09.11, 04:53
Instab: the confirmation e-mail is a bit borked, with "br"s and "/b"s that shouldn't be there. Usernames end with a number and nothing else, and passwords are 8 chars long. See if you can make yours work knowing that.

I heard about Usenet since I heard about the internet, I always wanted to use it and never understood the concept, never tried to understand it because every time I started reading about it would start like this: To join Usenet contact your ISP and see... bla bla, ya my ISP at that time would have been very considerate about people not getting a Usenet so they could start downloading when we barely were able to open a hotmail page.

What I know, might be wrong, it is like a mailing group, you subscribe and you would start getting files (rared) in parts sent to you, what I don't understand is two things, why do I need my ISP for this and why as far as I know it is the original source of group releases, I think most groups use it until now.

I thought it was power failure or something ;) Anyway, great post man, I am finally usenetting :klatsch_3: +1 (edit: sorry sys didnt allow)

I still don't understand it but here how it is done guys ...

1. Make account at the suggested site http://www.xsusenet.com/en

2. Download the client Unzbin - Tiny Usenet NZB Powerhouse | Download, Decode, Repair and Unpack! (http://www.unzbin.com/)

3. Search for *things* on Indexing sites, link given by anon, again : http://www.sb-innovation.de/redirector.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffilesharingtalk.co m%2Fthreads%2F396406-NZB-Indexing-sites%21

4. Download .NZB file (same as in torrents) and run it.

5. Before that, open your client, add the account you got in step one as server, use 2 (the limit of free version). servers maximize speed and now do step 4.

Tip: you need to connect to start the process or connect before you start adding files, I used SLL connection, working fine.

Just to mention as anon had already said Usenet offers a big selection of 'forums' (groups actually) with different kinds of topics and downloading binaries is just one side of it. There are free usenet servers around, so one does not have to pay for usenet. Google allows to do search there: Google Groups (http://groups.google.com)
Sometimes you can find more interesting results when you search in groups rather than in web (default google search)

So XS usenet is one of the servers that stores files sent by the groups ? all the servers have all the files of all the groups ? and how do we search for non binary stuff or how do we subscribe ?

what kind of things you can find there that there are not on the trackers??

Gapo

You get speed and reliability. Maybe even find releases you won't find on trackers.

sebota
14.09.11, 12:56
what kind of things you can find there that there are not on the trackers??

well the problem or not is that you are limited to 1Mb/s , I don't have super fast connection so it was good enough for me, I used it to get files that you can find on trackers (not all trackers) you need to search many trackers and if you find them you will probably find them dead or half of them dead, on usenet nothing is dead, always at the same speed, it's not a replacement for trackers.

Some downsides

1. This place won't stay forever as they clam, I wouldn't count on that (not free at least or not that fast)
2. People with fast internet won't enjoy this, they are giving them a taste of the service only.
3. Fake files... I found some fakes files (Big time)
4. Not enough details, at trackers you can see the number of seeders/screens/comments.
5. Some files has some missing parts on usenet, I don't know why.
6. X usenet doesn't have all the files of usenet archived, I found files using search sites but couldn't locate them on X usenet when added the same newsgroup
7. limited to 2 connections, you can't download 3 files at lower speeds if you like for example.
8. Some files are password protected ! I don't know how to deal with that yet.

The Good side.

1. No log in (you setup the client with name and pass and that's it)
2. you search in one place not 10 trackers
3. constant speed
4. No ratio to keep
5. No upload usage
6. No government IPs and so to hide from (for some)

Owyn

1. true, that happens.
2. also true. Not much of an issue for me as I don't consider 1Mbit to be glacial, but for those with lines a hundred times faster it may be a problem.
3. you can solve that by using a reliable site to get your NZBs. I use FST as I'm a member there already, there are other good ones as well (I think I posted a link).
4. same.
5. completion problems happen. Some people use block accounts (you pay per amount of transferred data and not every month) as fill servers (that "fill" the parts you don't have) to overcome this. It happens even on well-known paid services.
6. maybe those files were older than the maximum retention for XS Usenet?
7. true.
8. delete them immediately and seek a good release. Password-protected files, just like passworded RARs on public trackers, are a scam.

3. constant speed
4. No ratio to keep
5. No upload usage

That's how cool Usenet can be :ggrin:

That comparsion lacks a bit.
Otherwise passworded RARs on OCH would be scam too.
This is because there are Usenet Boards out there too who offer Infos to "their" own, password protected Releases.

They were new movies from boneless newsgroup but what I see is that X usenet is not archiving any movies from this group, if true it would make sense, they don't want large files but again they have movies from other groups, I downloaded one.

I subscribed to boneless using grabit client and I saw no text posts, only files... I thought I would see posts where in other groups would post the password or at least have a discussion. is there such groups ?

http://lookpic.com/O/i2/1715/KHuG55F.png

usenet has been my source for downloading for a fair few months, I still own accounts on private trackers, have good buffers and so on but what I like about usenet is, it maxes out your connection AND you don't have to seed, win win. my isp offers free usenet access which is like 30 days retention, which isn't too bad as it's free with my package! nice share mate, only if people knew how to use it they'd use it a lot more...

For popularity.
This was posted monday on their facebook page:

Current active user count: 197.830. XS Usenet grows with an average of 521 new accounts per day. Hitting the 200.000 marker will give us a reason to celebrate, don't miss out on our freebees and new updates!

And now changed the free user policy:

Free
Speed 1Mbit
Data 25GB
Connections 2
Max Hosts 1
SSL No
Retention 10

With the 1mbit was no problem, created many accounts and increased the speed, but the 10 day retention force you (for me at least) to buy premium acount.

anon

10 day retention

Then XS is no longer a good option. Just an option. Thankfully I have a Binload account, which is the best I know for non-IPv6 folks.

Just4Today is rumored to have retain files much longer than the 10 days they mention. If anyone could confirm that...

It's way safer than P2P, since you download from a server and don't have to upload anything. You do leave a paper trail depending on if/how you pay for access, and your activity may be logged.

That's as much data as you can get from a single Usenet.farm trial. They aggressively ban disposable e-mail addresses, but the tricks of stuffing your Gmail username with periods and adding a +foldername may work, and the service is very good.

If you open the userhash link you received when creating your account, you'll see something like this.

Username: ........
Password: ........
Maximal Connections: 1

Using dupe accounts may work, depending on how they enforce the connection limit. If news.nntp.pw had multiple A records, adding each one as a separate server and connecting to them using the same account could also increase the limit, but that is not the case.

What do you guys think about this method:

Getting an account from a VCC provider and just create a new VCC every time your free trial for an Usenet provider runs out?
Somebody suggested Privacy and BLUR as VCC provider but there are many more. I haven't tried this method at the moment.

hazz030
10.10.22, 15:40
i think those vcc providers will sooner or later get blacklisted by the usenet service.
i think i read that something like this happened when video streaming service trials were abused like that in the past.

so i managed to obtain a usenet farms trial but all the rare files iīm interested in arenīt available anymore.
i got the nzbīs from drunkenslīīī.com, thanks for the heads up on the open registration. i downloaded a random mainstream release and it worked fine - so itīs got nothing to do with my nzb client config.

i wonder if there is a way to verify if those files are available from another provider prior to signing up with them?

and is it possible to know if the files arenīt available anymore due to a copryright claim or expired due to lack of download activity? itīs not even a year old upload and i noticed the files were posted in various very weird news groups - could it be that most usenet donīt index those very well if at all?

itīs a bummer. iīm trying to help a friend out who needs a rare foreign show for a project and iīve only managed to find those o-rared scene releases on a bunch of 0day trackers but no seeders anymore and itīs only been snatched 2-3 times, a reseed request wasnīt even worth it.

which usenet providers are considered the best and do they have black friday sales?

This sort of throwaway, pseudonymous usage is basically what virtual cards were made for, so it should work in principle. But even assuming what hazz030 said never happens, the added complication and paper trail (a VCC must somehow receive funds from you at some point) would make it not worth it for me. Feel free to try it and tell us your experience, however :gwink:

Questions

https://old.reddit.com/r/usenet/wiki/index and https://nerosbb.com/ are a good place to research the answer to these. Pay close attention to the part about provider backbones.

i wonder if there is a way to verify if those files are available from another provider prior to signing up with them?

and is it possible to know if the files arenīt available anymore due to a copryright claim or expired due to lack of download activity? itīs not even a year old upload and i noticed the files were posted in various very weird news groups - could it be that most usenet donīt index those very well if at all?

itīs a bummer. iīm trying to help a friend out who needs a rare foreign show for a project and iīve only managed to find those o-rared scene releases on a bunch of 0day trackers but no seeders anymore and itīs only been snatched 2-3 times, a reseed request wasnīt even worth it.

which usenet providers are considered the best and do they have black friday sales?

1 I don't think so

2 I don't think so. There are 2 types of take down notices the USA onces (DMCA) and the Europe once. If you have a provider with a backbone in USA it will get a DMCA notice which why it will get taken down faster than a backbone in Europe with less hard take downs.

3 what is the name of the show? what episode ..........

4 Most people go with Eweka because its in the Netherlands--> less takedowns. They offer an "black friday deal" or discount if you google it (I think it was on reddit). Usually they cost around 7 but with the deal you get if for 3? a month.

Info regarding XS Usenet:

LATEST NEWS

Free Usenet retiring January 1

As of January 1, 2023 XS Usenet will be retiring its Free Usenet service.

Our Free Usenet service has always been our way of giving back to the community, something we have happily done for many years. There are however high costs associated in human resources and infrastructure with providing this service.
After over a decade of offering Free Usenet service to the community we have decided to completely shutdown our free service. Effective immediately, no new signups or support inquiries will be accepted and as of January 1 all Free Usenet subscriptions on our platform will be terminated.

The funds that we'll be freeing up will be deployed towards our capital expenditure budget for 2023 to support further product development in the VPN and Cloud Storage sector.

We appreciate your understanding and wish you a healthy and happy holiday season.

This suggests the conversion rate for free to paid accounts is too low, or even that their Usenet service in general is not making enough money.

In any case, it was good while it lasted, and it sure lasted long!

Nice catch, managed to get mine and 412 accounts are left as of this writing. Some tips for you all...

E-mail addresses are apparently not validated.
Speed and connection limits are excellent for a free service, but test accounts tend not to last forever... enjoy while you can!
test.xsnews.com has one A and one AAAA record, so if you have both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity, you may be able to double the caps by configuring each as a separate server.
Retention is "2600+ days" assuming it's the same as on their commercial service.
XS News uses the Abavia (Dutch) backbone and DMCA for takedowns.
The "no account sharing" rule, if enforced at all, may be bypassable by having only one person use it at the same time. Make sure your newsreaders don't keep idle connections open.

1 of my friends is using his account for 8 months now and it is still working.
My friend said it's only 1 month or 1 1/2 months retention but we will need to test that out ourselfs.

Did you try that and did it work? If it worked, what configuration do we need to do, to get 2 separate servers?

My friend said it's only 1 month or 1 1/2 months retention

Well, that's way less than I expected... but still good for new things, and significantly better than the 7 days just4today.net offered in the past =]

I haven't, because my ISP does not offer IPv6 and I don't have time to set up tunnelbrokers at the moment. But all you need to do is look up the DNS records for test.xsnews.com and add each A and AAAA as a separate server in your newsreader. Right now, they're as follows...

Class Record TTL Hostname Details
INet A 300 test.xsnews.com IPv4 Address: 91.223.220.236
INet Aaaa 300 test.xsnews.com IPv6 Address: 2001:67c:174:101:1:65:201:236

Note that 1. you'll need to turn off hostname verification for SSL, 2. this will have no effect if they enforce connection limits by account instead of IP.
