View Full Version : Two things that happened today

1. I was about to have a free hour at school plus plenty of time to post in the PC room, but suddenly some guys busted in the classroom. They said there were from the ministry of education and were taking different, anonymous tests to see how students were doing.

I was like "fuck you, you're stealing my posting time!".

Today's test was about maths. Three more will follow the next days. Only good thing is that they override any other "domestic" ones we have, meaning bye bye to a programming exam I had tomorrow, until next week.

2. After a quick, partial posting rush here later afterwards, my school day finally ended.

I thought "yay, now I can go to the cafe, and although it's not free, I can finish posting here and begin doing all my FST "work"!".

Well, I was actually opening the separate Opera instance I use for FST, when something in my pocket begins vibrating. It was my beloved hiPhone. I took it out. It stopped vibrating, because the caller (yes, me receiving a call!) had hung up. I stuff it back in my pocket and begin typing my second post - something goes zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. My phone again. I make it in time and the phone shouts the following words:

"Hey anon, you have a screwdriver, right?

(I did have one)

Come here ASAP, we've stumbled upon a few PC cases and need your help!"

That stunned me on the spot. Since I had finished my daily posting here and FST could certainly wait, I logged out of both, cleared all traces, rebooted the computer, and began running to their position. Being just a few steps away from where one of my friends was, I see another of them walk towards me with a full PC case on his shoulder and a smile on his face. I approach the other one and he tells me, "the fucker got away with the only case with everything on it, there's only a motherboard and some HDDs here". We take the remaining stuff to safe place in the street, and I begin disassembling both with my Philips-point screwdriver. After 10 or 15 minutes and a lot of jokes, I had an ASRock K7CM3 in one hand and a 40GB WD Caviar in the other.

Because we all love pics:

Actually, I have some work to do - the motherboard only came with the CMOS battery and what appears to be an ISA 56K modem. Nothing else

I ran quite fast, but he was already there when they found the cases, and I'm not Flash, so...

The disk and a bare-bones motherboard. They took everything else.

Back.

Things didn't go as expected, but they finished with a slight advantage on my side.

---------- Post added at 19:24 ---------- Previous post was at 18:52 ----------

Okies, here's the deal. I spent the last four hours trying to install the drive. When doing what was supposed to be the last test before assembling the whole case, I turn my PC on, and... beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep... beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep... beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep... the PC speaker froze me on the spot. Considering I had also taken a few minutes to clean up my processor's cooler and simply unscrewed the fan off for easy access to the years-old dust instead of taking the whole thing elsewhere, those long beeps made me have suicidal thoughts. What if I had applied too much force and snapped the processor's code in half? And since it's a 5 year-old chip, where would I find one, and at what price? :dabs:

Thankfully, after a few minutes of trying anything else that may have been the cause, I found the actual one: the new drive was preventing the BIOS from, well, starting. Tried different IDE combos and everything, but as long as the thing was plugged in, nothing would happen.

Long story short, my father noticed my disappointment and offered to donate a 20GB IBM disk. Installed it, part'ed and formatted. Working fine. Because we all love pics:

Moral: if it's on the street, it's for a good reason.

LOL I have a similar story. Once when I was in High School (around 2002), the school received a "donation", which was basically very outdated, non-working, incomplete computers. There were about 50 of them, and a box full of HDs. Long story short, I offered to help in exchange for some parts with the help of a school mate. The school agreed, so I asked my mate to check the HDs while I assembled some PCs with the scrap parts. The HDs ranged from 60mb to 1.6gb. What happened? He didn't know the difference between master and single and call all the HDs defective. I asked to take them home and when I realized his mistake I got an incredible surprise......I sold HDs for years! :D

Are you sure this was in 2002? Those disks must be really old, then.

Umm....Yes Anon, I am positive. They were all IDE ATA33/66, back in the mid 90s a 200mb hd was the standard, having a 100mb hd or less was not unusual.
I also got a Hayes 144000 ISA modem which was surprisingly fast compared to a 56k generic winmodem, and a 133mhz Pentium PC which used video memory expansions (from 2mb to 4mb).
Keep in mind I am almost 10 years older than you ;)

I know, just found it a bit odd that you were still using such low-capacity drives by then...

For a company, donating stuff is actually cheaper than throwing it away. They sent very old crap, and not only PCs: 3 legged desks, chairs and botomless trashbins (I am not kidding)
It was no other than the good guys at Perez Companc who cared for our education and provided us which such useful materials.
You would not believe what some of those HDs had.
