View Full Version : What do you do when you can't sleep?

Counting sheep just doesn't cut it, and staying on the computer would be severely counterproductive for me... so what other tips do you have?

Today I almost couldn't sleep at all - it was 2am and I was still awake, and I had to get up by six. The worst part is that even though I feel fine now, in an hour or two that will change to "very tired".

What do you do when you can't sleep?

I don't sleep.
--------------------------------
TBH, I read something (lesser), go online, watch tv, going for sport, etc..

However, I would not recommend anyone to take SLEEPING-PILLS, that's BAD for your HEALTH.

Edit: I once read that if you can't sleep, than you should always try to sleep, the days will move on and it will getting easier and easier to sleep.
That's what a doc, said. It has something to do with the sleeping-rhythm etc.

I play this game called Osmos. Laid back game, really ambient soundtrack. It's like video game narcolepsy.

Might also want to try downloading a program called f.lux. It adjusts your monitors brightness based on the time of day, making it slightly dimmer in the evenings so it isn't as bright in darkened rooms. To my surprise, it's actually helped quite a bit. Just be sure to adjust the color in the evening so it's just bright enough that it doesn't give it a yellow hue.

I usually just don't go to bed until I'm tired enough. And I actually hate sleeping lol. Damn waste of time. Always find something to do, and its depressing when I see its 4 am already and that I need to go sleep if I'm about to wake up in some reasonable time "tomorrow".

Oh and waking up early in the morning usually means easier going to sleep at night, ye?

trivia: i heard somewhere spiritually evolved/enlightened people don't need much of sleep :D

The only way is to force me to shut down the computer, force me laying me into my bed and staying there. The hardest part is to shut down the PC...
Once i'm in the bed, its not that hard.Do some One-Hand sports, think about some shit and after a few hours you will be asleep. The first 30 mins are boring, but once your brain recognized you try to sleep it slowly shuts down.

Figuratively correct, but actually something completely different is going on.

That totally doesn't work for me, don't know how works for others. :shockkk!:

If there is something watchable on TV it gets my all attention and I just can't fall asleep wtf. If its something shitty and boring (as usually on TV is) no way I could force myself to watch it until I fell asleep.

Anon, Just close your eyes and imagine yourself in your own world, a world that you can do almost anything, imagine the fun. Bring yourself in peace and relax.

Or you can try some tips from theplace or bitseduce (do they have self improvement books, right? so maybe we can get some tips from those books?).

Fyi, watching movie while sleeping isn't recommended.

It also means you're very productive man. So let's make a new cheater tool for us then when we're sleeping.. But that's not good for your health.

Usually I can not sleep properly when I have made, for example, no sport for a long time. Possibly, would be a detrimental "long-term effect". It's not about competitive sports but no making any movement at all. Computer games or games on the iPhone make me worse, unfortunately. I could stay awake for hours with the above result so I'm broken when I have to get up. If it happens often you might want to rethink what you do before bed time, if there is possibly something wrong at your body or worse. So if you drink cola or coffee too much, etc. You must change your habit. And no, I'm not an eco, but now somewhat experienced in life - at least in some respects.

Worst thing to do when you can't sleep is probably going on the pc. Tv isn't much better. These two tend to wake you up more, rather than make you sleepy. Try finding other activities after a certain hour if you have trouble sleeping. Like reading a book or going for a walk.

Oh, it's been nearly a 8 years since the last post, damn.

Usually I just read manga when I can't fall asleep, taking sleeping pills is indeed a bad idea, but Melatonin pills seem to be much safer and considered "natural"

And yea, those blue light filters, both for PC (F.lux) and Android (Twilight) are life-saving. Honestly, I haven't seen any difference first week or two, reading in bed at night with blue light filter , but after a month or so I realized that I'm falling asleep much faster and my eyes are feeling relaxed, didn't expect that from a single software at all

I didn't pay Nobody's comment about f.lux much attention at the time, since computer usage was not the reason (or the reason for the reason) I created this thread. But now I can't recommend color temperature filters hard enough. Awareness of this problem has increased over the last years, to the point Windows 10 has a f.lux-like feature built in, as do some MediaTek-based phones.

I've had my redshift permanently set to 2300K (as opposed to during nighttime only) for months now and I'm the happiest I've ever been :smilie4:

yoco

So do I understand this right. This software changes your monitor colors, when it's dark, but during day it remains the same?

I choose "reduce eyestrain" and the number is on 5900k

Sazzy
01.08.18, 21:37
Am using the windows 10 one and love it. It has a sheduler as well. Same with f.lux btw.
Daytime is normal, as soon as the sun goes down, the blue colors start getting a lot softer.

anon
02.08.18, 01:10
So do I understand this right. This software changes your monitor colors, when it's dark, but during day it remains the same?

Yes (at least that's the default).

Anyway, here are some tips. Firstly, make sure your location is configured correctly. Secondly, there is almost no difference between 6500K (the baseline) and your current 5900. I suggest you start with 4500 for nighttime, then reduce it to 3400 after some days, and finally 2300, the lower limit before your screen starts looking like a darkroom.

You need to apply a registry tweak and reboot to dip below 4500K, but f.lux will automatically notify you and offer to do it.
