How to improve retention on a tracker

Implement bonus points. Make the system give you one point per seeding torrent per hour, or just one point per hour. If you're feeling tough, make that 0.1 points per hour for 0kB/s seeding, variable up to 1p/hour depending on the reported upload speed.

And here's the important part: give users absolutely no use for those bonus points. No trading for upload, invites, or a custom title, nothing. People will still struggle to see who gets the most points, keeping torrents well-seeded and speeds zippy in your tracker. :lol:

Yes, exactly what I meant. Human nature, I guess. And I'll admit that if I was on such a tracker, I'd still feel bad about having little bonus points. :happy:

Of coure, there are also trackers where u can change the points for invites - hd-torrents.org for example. The only way to get an invite is to change it for bonus points.

Oh, no invites. But at least donating allows you to suck the tracker dry:

Well...I think many trackers allow u that if u pay :) But the thing with the donations on HD-T is strange though, because it's a bulgarian tracker and the most bg trackers don't accept donations.

Hm, only trackers I can remember now that I'm member of and that they utilize some sort of bonus points are: bitHQ with their "bitz" and THR (torrentHR, croatian no-ratio tracker) which has "karma". Both make use of their points in some way or other...

here is quick c/p for bitHQ bitz utilization if anyone interested:

Bitz can be earned through several ways and you will also be able to lose them through several other ways:

Bitz you can earn:

- For every 15 minutes seeding*: 0.05 Bitz
- For every uploaded MB: 0.70 Bitz
- Leaving a comment on a torrent: 0.50 Bitz
- For every forum post you make: 0.50 Bitz
- For every rating you give on a torrent: 5.00 Bitz (note: this goes only for torrent ratings, not movie ratings!)
- For every poll you participate in: 10.00 Bitz
- For writing a review: 150.00 Bitz
- For every uploaded torrent: 250.00 Bitz
- For filling a request: 250.00 Bitz
- Through interest in our bank**: XXX Bitz
- Winning the lottery***: XXX Bitz

Bitz you can lose:

I'm currently in good standing with bitz, putting them in virtual bank every time I came across tracker so it multiplies after a while. :D
But since not using tracker quite much there is ppl with waaaaaay bigger pocket.
