Sebastian Vettel winning the 2010 F1 Malaysian Grand Prix
Twenty three drivers began and seventeen lasted the 56 lap distance of the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang F1 circuit. While the qualifying sessions saw the rain gods go berserk, the track managed to be bone dry during the actual 56 lap race. Sebastian Vettel, who started from third place managed to muscle past the pole sitter Mark Webber and from there on, it was Vettel all the way. Mark Webber clung on to the second place till the race finish while Nico Rosberg drove a strong race for Mercedes to make up the third and final podium position.

German ace Michael Schumacher retired as early as the 9th lap while another former world champion, Fernando Alonso suffered a blown engine on the penultimate lap of the grueling tropical race. Lewis Hamilton drove superbly to end up sixth after starting from a lowly 20th. But, even more superb was the way Adrian Sutil held Hamilton off. This was the defining moment for Force India and Adrian Sutil and the result was a spectacular fifth place finish, Force India’s best yet. That, certainly will warm plenty of Indian hearts.

Karun Chandhok’s Hispania Racing F1 car managed to stick it’s nose ahead of both the Lotus racing machines and managed a well fought 15th. More crucially, Karun managed to outshine team mate Bruno Senna who finished 16th. This year’s F1 championship promises to be one hell of a humdinger with all the top drivers giving each other a really tough fight. Coming to the driver championship standings, Felipe Massa leads with 39. Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel follow with 37. Button has 35, Hamilton 31 and Robert Kubica rounds of the top six list with 30 championship points. The constructors championship too sees a similar points spread with Ferrari dominating proceedings with 76 points, McLaren with 66, Red Bull with 61, Mercedes with 44 and Renault with 30 championship points.
