View Full Version : I need to stop downloading.

Im serious.
I've got so much material on my HDD that I don't even know what I've watched let alone where I got it from.

Please tell me I'm not the only one suffering from this incurable habit.

I try to go jogging at times, but it seems to me that the first thing that I do after I return home from work is turn on the damn thing, start up my client, cruise over to this place, and catch up on the latest gossip.

Only then do I actually go for a shower where I can actually get away from the internet, downloading, and every other pleasure known to humankind.

It seems that even after I load up my baby, I start playing games on my machine and try to beat my own highscores.

Downloading is one pastime that I do like, but it just seems to be getting the best of me. There's so much good stuff that I see that I download it for future viewing or even listening pleasure.

And even then, it just mounts up and up and up, till I don't even know what I've watched .....you get the picture.

Am I diseased somehow....???:biggrin::smile:

Am I the only one suffering from 'computer'itis' with it's tangential obbsession of 'download'itis'??

I, too, suffer from this horrible affliction. Recently though, I was forced to go through and delete several hundred GBs due to lack of HDD space. A couple of weeks ago I bought a new HDD and it happened all other again. I now have a bunch of new games I'll never play, music and movies I will probably run through once and applications that I 'll never glance at again. Leeching is just too much fun. I've been like this for over a decade and old habits die hard.

I guess you are not alone SealLion, I used to do this in the past, until my free space ended for good and burning things to DVD to never touch it again in the future seems a no go too. Jogging is good, I do it too. I could suggest maybe trying to go to watch this or that hyped movie in the theaters with family or friends could help keeping you away from the computer for some time.

Well i have this problem too.I have like 30 movies downloaded but since i am boored of watching movies and i am playing games right now those movies will stay there for 1 month minimum. That is, if i will even watch it.

You are not alone.

My annual data traffic dl+up is around 7 Tb, so all I can say:

delete.exe ownz ;)

External HDD costs 60 euros per 1 Tb, just get more and encrypt them oc.

serveral thousands of CD/DVD/BD filled, several TBs of hdd always full....

someone needs to find a cure ;(

I solved this problem by storing only valuable Appz, Games and burning them to RW media...
Once they are too old ill probably overwrite them:)

Movies get deleted right after they are watched and if i have no time to watch they get deleted also!

First step is to admit that you have a problem

I used to be like that in the past, i downloaded everything that came out (for when i have time, i used to say)...
now i only download things for the day, watch/play and then delete

anon
01.11.09, 17:08
I used to leech all day like that, but not anymore. Now I mostly download things for my friends - who don't have an Internet connection or know what BitTorrent is at all - and music, which I listen to while I do my work.

Although I do keep the downloads folder from those "golden days", where uTorrent would be downloading all the new additions on Fulldls.com 24/7. Eventually the amount of free hard drive space became dangerously low, and thus I had to start recording a lot of that stuff to CDs and DVDs.

There's also this big list of movies yet to be watched on my S: drive... I only keep the good ones now, others are Shift+Del'ed after I finish watching them on my "MP5 Player".

Holy Frak!!

I actually thought that I was alone in the world on this thing.

Isn't there an official club of some sorts??

Other than the 'downers' club...like DA....you know...Downloaders Anonymous. LOL.

similar situation here, although i didn't go for it 'all', but no matter how selective i get, there's still too much of it

next time you wanna download something ask yourself: do i really need that sh*te

hey SeaLion,
here comes the doc ,

got a solution for you.

install a "Bandwidth monitor program" and set like 20GB/month Alert,
after that use an internet speed limiting program to cut your internet speed to the half or quarter to punish yourself, so you'll think twice before downloading or not.

@cheatos and slikrapid: Firstly, I'm gonna ask around at the link and see if there's something for me there. LOL.
i THINK that cumpulsive surfing may fall into my catagory. LOL

also, I think that I do have a bandwidth control program and yes, I did install it last year. And did it ever control my bandwidth. I experiemented on a couple of things. One of them being my download client and it did work quite well.

I also gave it a try on Firefox and did the same as well.

I think that I got it as a crack. It's called Bandwidth Control Enterprise.

I'd hate to use that thing again. It controls it waaaay to much if the setttings aren't correctly done.

It's easy to use, ya. But I like strong and fast speeds while browsing.

I guess I'll try what I've tried before in the past.....to get myself to not download anything. Period. LOL.

I don't know about electro shock therapy.

That'lll hurt. .....OUCH!!!!!

Seal Lion it's simple. To forget about downloading you should do something else.I usually edit pictures with gimp/look for new SB-i avatars/look for new songs on grooveshark or reinforce my youtube anime collection(favorites I'm to lazy to make vids atm don't even know how lol)

I used to be like that too but I started thinking "There will always be new stuff to download. I can't have it all so..." I deleted everything. Based on the fact that hard drive will never be sufficient for anything wheather it's audio/video/games/images etc.
I always think of my hard drive as a "temporary" place to store the stuff I want and If there are items which i wanna keep, I just store them on to a dvd. So now, when i download a movie for ex and I don't watch it in the next day or so, i'll delete it and re-download it when I wanna see that again.

04.11.09, 14:17
Well you can set a target and buy yourself 1 hdd a year or so. That should slow down your download thirst, if you reach your hdd capacity delete your older content and restrain yourself from buying a new hdd immediate till you reach your traget year  I am a big fan of raw blue-ray content !! :eek3:

Newtons Laws of downloading.

1st law
" A torrent remains to be in a state of downloading or seeding unless the Hard Disk gets filled "

2nd law.
" Downloading is proportional to bandwidth.Greater the bandwidth, more is the urge to download.Lesser the bandwidth , lesser is the urge."

3rd Law.
"For every new tracker released , we have an equal number of Cheating techniques"

Daam i am good :klatsch_3:

original 3 Newton's laws of motion:

# In the absence of force, a body either is at rest or moves in a straight line with constant speed.
# A body experiencing a force F experiences an acceleration a related to F by F = ma, where m is the mass of the body. Alternatively, force is proportional to the time derivative of momentum.
# Whenever a first body exerts a force F on a second body, the second body exerts a force −F on the first body. F and −F are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction

Wannabe laws of torrenting:

In the absence of one downloader, a seeded torrent either is at rest or active by moving data towards another downloader in a packet by packet way with all available bandwidth

A torrent of a size S experiencing a download, experiences at least one average downloading speed v related to S by S = SUMM 0-i [v(i)*t(i)], where t is the total time the downloader was receiving data from uploader i. Alternatively, size S is equal or greater than data received from every other uploader of the same torrent. This law also applies if torrent is partially downloaded in which case S is replaced by Sp (partial size of the torrent)

Whenever a torrent exerts a download D upon the swarm, it receives an upload U from the swarm. The total D & U are equal in size and opposite in direction considering the downloader's connection to at least the first node

:eek13:

If i am able to decipher it correctly , then this is what it implies
First body=Torrent, Force=Download,Swarm=Second body

Seriously that was a good one

For every upload there's a download. If a seeder is moving data up, then a leecher is moving it down.

Maybe you need something like a dog collar that gives you a small shock everytime you go over a certain limit. Not really a collar but a bracelet. lol . But I see what you mean. I have so much music downloaded that it would take me months of continuous listening to go through it once. I guess when theres free stuff, you just wanna grab as much as you can. Plus it's nice to see those download speeds go higher and higher and you cant help keep checking it again and again. I'm afraid theres no cure. ur only limited by ur hdd space but i find myself deleting old unwatched stuff and donwloading moar.

I am also a Trance fan and as a Trance fan I try to keep up with all the latest releases from artists and DJs sets.
but that's impossible.
I got to a situation I have 50 GBs of music I haven't even listened to and need to determine if I like or not.
50 GBs assuming ALL of it is 320 web releases is 16 straight days of music (measured by time)
and I keep downloading every weekend more and more releases :(

I am hopeless..
