Core i5 750 review (Probably the best gaming processor in the world)

Our first taste of Intel's new mainstream 'Lynnfield' CPU comes in the form of the entry-level Core i5 750 processor.

Officially, it's a 2.66GHz quad-core processor with 8MB of L3 cache memory and drops into the new LGA 1,156 socket. As for pricing, expect to pay around £150 from your favourite etailer.

For the most part, its internal workings are identical to existing Core i7 processors which have been on sale since late last year. It's built using the same 45nm silicon production process and benefits from Intel's newest processor architecture, known as Nehalem.

Nice review, but in my opinion Intel has messed up by creating these 2 different new sockets, named 1156 and 1356. Because I think the problem with bying an i5, is getting "locked" with its 1156 motherboard, so you won't be able to upgrade in the future to a more powerful i7 that uses another socket. :frown:

well for now from all the test's i have seen i am for buying (i use it for gaming)AMD Phenom II 955 3.2GHZ and overclock it to 3.8.New 6 core AMD processor's that are coming next year will also be backward compatible with AM3 motherboards,i think also with AM2...

Well,having an iCore processor is something good but puts your in the edge of having weak performance in the coming years due to heavy implementations applied in most new motherboards recently pumped in the market.

Still,as kazuya mentioned, the only thing that makes your survive new tweaks for quite a while is having a monster AMD with AM2+ boards.

i would go for Phenom II 955/965 with Asus Crosshair 3 Formula motherboard.cheap,the best for AMD and no difference in games,even in some better then i5/i7.and the best thing it will be compatible with future processors from AMD, socket for i5/i7 not.for Games it's important big CPU clock rate (phenom 3.2,3.4..)and normal at most just a good Graphic card.

and don't believe every site with they tests,most just favor Intel...

I use a Phenom 2 X4 955 and I'm lucky with it.
It's cheaper and faster than Core i5 and i7 series during gaming.

I like AMD more too, but someone said to me, that i5/7 are more stable and better at overclocking!

If you plan to upgrade again in another 10-12 months then go for Intel setup or else as suggested by Kazuya go with AMD.

For me I buy step by step:
CPU and Grafikcard alternating and Harddisks yearly.

I won't understand the post by kelly:
All three sockets (AM3, 1156 and 1366) are compatible with future cpus - for at least 3 years. (until DDR4 is out)

This is only one benchmark and a benchmark which is intel optimized:
It uses Multicore and Hyperthreading very intensive - very untypical for normal software.
This means: Intel has with the i7 there 8threads (4cores à 2 threads) CPU - normaly software can only use up to four threads.
Then you should take a look at cpus in one pricing category:
PassMark CPU Benchmarks - Common CPU's (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html)

You may take a look at some gaming tests - there the i7 is sometimes slower than the Phenom 2.
