Mario might be one the most known video-game characters in the world (perhaps after pac-man). Even Solid Snake was happy to have survived long enough to face him on the battlefield (lol, this was taken from an anectode from the Wii game Super Smash Brothers Brawl, which features a lot of Nintendo characters along with Sonic from SEGA and Solid Snake).

And this is very interesting, to see how some artists depict Mario and his gang. Nice finding.
