Deep Freeze protects the computer by utilizing a separate partition on the hard disk drive for write back. When the computer is rebooted, this partition is treated empty again and existing information on it is unaccessible. This allows users to make 'virtual' changes to the system, giving them the appearance that they can modify core files or even delete them, and even make the system unusable to themselves, but upon reboot the 'frozen' state of the operating system is restored.

To make changes, a system administrator must 'unfreeze' the system partition, make any needed changes, and 'freeze' it again. These changes, in this way, are saved to the protected partition instead of the 'unfrozen' write back partition.

Internet Cafe owners in my country use this a lot to prevent the things people download from rendering PCs unusable.

Unfortunately, there's a 100KB app that can totally bypass it without needing the password.

deepfreeze is an excellent tool - i have installed it onto all of the machines our clients use for web browsing at my workplace as i'm sick of repairing things (lazy).

it's true what anon says about a bypass, but the dumbasses i have to deal with would never even imagine such a thing - hell, they don't even know that deepfreeze is running!

@rebrov

i haven't seen winrollback before, so i'm gonna try it out this afternoon! more tools are always welcome!

a program that i use on my main windows box at home is Returnil - Returnil-The Real Security (http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/)

you can run the machine in an unlocked mode by default, then switch to a locked mode with a simple button click - no restart needed - very useful if you're not running things through a sandbox and want to quickly try something out :top:

I've seen people using this in lan houses in my country too, but never knew their names. Nice to know about this one, will give it a try later. Can you name other apps like this one? Besides winrollback that rebrov mentioned?

sure guys :)

look the most apps i used and work for sharm for me really :) they are not deepfreeze or clean slate or otheres i just tried :

Winrollback its so perfect but the problem is its so high security on USB flash disks because when u try to put ur flash disk although u turn it off :) after u copying every thing or do whatever u doing when u unplug the flash disk it will get the blue screen of death :) but it wont effect the system but u have to restart :)

but the software is so good

if u want to avoid this be4 u unplug the flash memory restart the pc and then be4 it goesn on the windows again unplug the flash :)

and i found software recently better than winroll back and im working with it now

its : Shadow Defender its like deepfreeze and winrollback but better u can put exclusion list of folders unprotected to download normally on them and its so cool really check it out

It's not that secure, then.

If I remember correctly, there was a trick to soft-disable USB mass storage devices, by taking away everyone's permissions to read the USBSTOR.INF file. If you don't need support for such devices, the BSoD issue could be worked around by doing that.

And DeepFreeze for Windows 9x can be bypassed even more easily, just boot into DOS mode and rename/delete some VxD file.

you can also do this with deepfreeze (and most of the other software mentioned here).

just read the manuals - it would be silly not to include such options - windows updates, antivirus updates etc would have to be downloaded every time you restarted if you couldn't!

I don't think they're free, but according Google, yes, they're similar to DeepFreeze.
