It's about time for me to buy a new hdd. And i don't know what to choose:

HDD 500GB-SATA-16MB Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 (HDP725050GLA360)
HDD 500GB-SATA-16MB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 (ST3500410AS)
HDD 500GB-SATA-16MB Western Digital Caviar SE (WD5000AAKS)

The hdd will be used as system+docs+media

Seagate Barracuda
After .11 firmware issues i'm a little afraid to buy Seagate products now. I know that in .12 there's no problems with firmware but this is the first one-plated 500Gb hdd and i read that it's still a little bit "raw"

I'd chose Hitachi Deskstar...I've already chosen it and I am proud with my HDD:redface:

As I've heard a lot of bad things about WD HDDs I can only recommend you to stick to the Seagate or the Hitachi. :wink2:

Yeap my friend had a few WD and they all were laggy espetially with access time.

What about samsung F1 series? Head that they are pretty good.

As you can see, all 3 vendors do have performance/quality issues from time to time.
Don't bother and buy the cheapest.

Go for Hitachi Deskstar, coz its not known to have problems than Seagate and WD.

I work in a computer store here and the return rate on all 3 is roughly the same and they are nearly identical performance wise (The WD actually is a bit slower then the rest but its negligible) so just make sure the place you get it from has good RMA policy and choose the cheaper one.

P.S
You should check the prices on the 1TB's as it might be better value, compare the GB-per-"Insert your local currency here"
I ended up getting an external Seagate 1TB because of the value, convenience and lack of internal HD space

My offer would be WD, as i heard, they didn't have any so big problems so far, so I trust them. I have one in my computer, and never did have problems with him.

yea i would go for that, when i will be busting new PC then 1TB would be a must have now.It costs just a little bit more then 500Gb but it's double more space

Agreed. I'd go for a 1TB Seagate at the moment while there's still an oversupply. Better make your move before 1.5TB goes mainstream.

I always go for WD for no particular reason. I agree with those that said "buy the cheapest" because all companies they all have issues from time to time.

i would definitely go for the first one- HDD 500GB-SATA-16MB Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 (HDP725050GLA360)

i have 6 of these exact drives in my machine - they run great! silent and fast

I would wait for SSD to come down in price, and then go for them, but thats my choice.

I'm currently using a 1.5 TB Seagate HDD. Can't complain about it at all!

wd would be my first choice.
if you can get a good deal on the seagate, that would also be ok.

so far for me wd is the best, seagate has failed me with their firmware issue and costed me a lot of my data. i never used hitachi though. For more than 10 years i use wd with no issues yet

I have all three in my PC right now. (different sizes but all same performance).
they are all great and (god forbid) never had problems with neither.
I say go the the cheapest or with Seagate which I'm the most satisfied with.
